AIIMS Jodhpur performs Rajasthan's first complex ESD

AIIMS Jodhpur achieved a landmark in medical care by performing Rajasthan's first complex Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) to remove a massive 10x10 cm rectal tumour without resorting to open surgery. The procedure was carried out by the institute's gastroenterology team, marking a significant milestone in advanced gastrointestinal care within the state.

Challenging Case Successfully Treated

The tumour, identified as a laterally spreading tumour (LST), covered a large portion of the rectal wall, making it a highly challenging case that would typically necessitate major abdominal surgery. However, the medical team successfully removed the entire lesion using the minimally invasive ESD technique in an operation that lasted approximately eight hours.

Expert Insights on the Procedure

Associate Professor Dr. Ashish Agarwal from the Department of Gastroenterology explained that the procedure helped avoid open surgery, preserved the organ, reduced complications, and ensured faster recovery for the patient. He further noted that the patient has recovered well and is being discharged in stable condition, highlighting the institute's growing expertise in advanced therapeutic endoscopy.
