Ahmedabad Teen's Tragic Nilgai Accident Leads to Life-Saving Organ Donation
A devastating incident involving a nilgai, commonly known as a blue bull, resulted in the untimely death of 17-year-old Krish Akbari in Ahmedabad on March 31. The Class 12 science student from the Science City area succumbed to severe injuries after the animal collided with him, but his legacy lives on through the selfless decision of his parents to donate his organs, saving numerous lives.
Details of the Freak Accident
The tragedy unfolded on Tuesday near Divine Road at approximately 5:15 PM, as Krish was en route to his biology tuition. According to eyewitness accounts, a nilgai, startled by the honking of a truck on the opposite side of the road, leaped and landed directly onto the teenager. The impact caused critical head and facial injuries, prompting immediate medical attention.
Krish was rushed to a private hospital, where surgeons performed emergency procedures to stabilize his vital signs. However, MRI scans revealed permanent brain damage due to oxygen deprivation. After two apnoea tests confirmed brain death, doctors officially declared him deceased.
Family's Heartbreaking Decision and Organ Donation
Krish's parents, Ravi and Hemangi Akbari, shared that their son had aspired to become a physiotherapist, following in his father's footsteps. In an emotional message circulated within medical communities, they described the harrowing moments: "By the time he was taken in an ambulance, he had already lost blood, and his pulse had dropped. He was operated on to stop bleeding and bring the pulse back. He was put on ventilatory support. The next day, the vital signs were stable but there was no signal from brain. MRI report indicated that out of three arteries supplying blood to the brain, two were already blocked."
Faced with the grim prognosis of no chance of recovery, the Akbaris chose to donate Krish's organs, viewing it as a way for their son to continue living through others. His heart was transplanted into a 13-year-old boy from Bhavnagar, his lungs went to a youth, his kidneys saved two teenagers aged 16 and 17, his corneas were given to a patient in Ahmedabad, and his hands were sent to a boy in Faridabad.
Ravi Akbari expressed, "When doctors informed us there was no chance of recovery, we saw organ donation as an opportunity for our son to live on in others. In fact, when Krish's last rites were being performed, his heart was being transplanted in a 13-year-old boy from Bhavnagar. We saw it as a sign and hope that it may inspire more to donate organs." The family proudly stated, "Krish has left the world after giving so much. He has saved not one, but many lives. We are proud parents."
Rising Concerns Over Nilgai Menace in Urban Areas
This incident has reignited urgent discussions about the nilgai menace in urban Ahmedabad. A local social worker highlighted that nilgais frequently pose traffic hazards, particularly between the SP Ring Road and SG Road. He pointed out a bureaucratic gap, noting that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation often deflects such complaints to the forest department, treating them as wildlife issues.
"There must be a clear mechanism to address these concerns so we do not lose more citizens to such accidents," he urged, calling for improved coordination and preventive measures to mitigate future risks.
