Ahmedabad Doctor Recalls Challenges of Handling 370 Body Parts After Crash
Ahmedabad Doctor Recalls Crash Aftermath Challenges

Ahmedabad: For Dr Dharmesh Patel, additional dean at BJ Medical College and head of the forensic medicine department, the first 48 hours after the crash are a big blur. “Bodies kept coming in. We were trying to salvage everything we could, carry out postmortems and hand over remains for DNA analysis,” he recalls.

No one from the 30-member team left the premises, though they were emotionally and physically drained. “In fact, teams at the site kept finding body parts for 25 days straight,” he said. In all, about 370 body parts were found, recount team members. Patel said that the nature of the tragedy – bodies burnt at a very high temperature – posed several challenges, but the work set a landmark that helped relatives find closure.
