18 Ghaziabad societies achieve 90% dog sterilisation

Taking inspiration from Shipra Sun City's successful stray dog management, 18 societies in Ghaziabad have now achieved at least 90% sterilisation of community dogs. These societies include Astha Apartment, Gulmohar Green Society, Kamla Nagar CBI Academy, Green Avenue Apartment in Vasundhara, Migsun Roof Society, RNE, Ajnara Green Society, and Cloud 9 in Vaishali Sector 9.

Veterinary Officer's Statement

Anuj Singh, a veterinary officer with the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC), stated, "In KDP Grand Shavana, RNE, only two dogs have not been sterilised due to their old age. In Panchsheel Wellington in Crossings Republik, three female dogs could not be operated on for the same reason, while in the rest of the societies, close to 100% sterilisation has been achieved. In Magaunpuram Society, three dogs could not be sterilised as they are still puppies."

Microchipping and Database

The officer further informed that microchips have been installed on sterilised dogs. "Now, we have a database of all sterilised community dogs. By year's end, we have set a goal to achieve similar targets in at least 20 wards — from ward number 91 to 101 and ward number 1 to 10. We are in the process of identifying strays with the help of RWAs and other organisations," he said.

Resident Perspectives

Sam Sundar Singh, a resident of Shyam Park, Gali number 6, Sahibabad, said, "The RWA and the GMC over the past many months have been holding meetings on how to achieve 100% sterilisation of community dogs. The RWA members are meeting all stakeholders, dog feeders and other animal rights NGOs, and we have been discussing how to achieve the targets. Our society has no more dogs left for sterilisation."

Anshuman Singh, a resident of Astha Apartment, added, "Just like Shipra Sun City, we have an unofficial working committee that is looking after the issue, and differences are being ironed out in meetings rather than taking on each other on the streets."

Stray Dog Census and Sterilisation Progress

According to the 2021 stray census conducted by GMC, there were about 48,000 strays, which increased to approximately 65,000 as per rough estimates. From April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026, officials reported that GMC has sterilised 10,137 strays, and in total, 47,099 strays have been sterilised in the city so far.
