The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday stated that 'Gau Seva' (service to cows) is no longer limited to religious faith but has evolved into a robust economic model, injecting new momentum into the state's rural economy.
Dairy Sector Expansion Boosts Incomes and Employment
A state government spokesperson said the rapid expansion in the dairy sector has significantly increased the incomes of farmers and youth while generating sustainable employment opportunities in rural areas.
Additional Chief Secretary of the Animal Husbandry Department, Mukesh Meshram, announced that Uttar Pradesh has achieved a record-breaking milestone in milk production, emerging as the largest milk-producing state in the country. UP's share in national milk production has crossed 16%, surpassing states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
Youth Integration into Economic Mainstream
For the first time, young people have been integrated into the economic mainstream through the dairy sector. Meshram attributed this growth to planned development, stating that the surge in the dairy sector symbolizes Uttar Pradesh's changing landscape. "With rising incomes, young people are no longer migrating from their villages," he said.
Government Initiatives Driving Transformation
Initiatives such as the "Mini Nandini Krishak Samriddhi Yojana" and the "Nand Baba Milk Mission" have successfully translated this transformation into reality at the grassroots level. The spokesperson noted that modern dairy units are now being established locally across rural areas, boosting milk production and creating employment in allied sectors like animal feed production, transportation, milk collection, and marketing.
Young entrepreneurs are establishing dairy units, generating employment for themselves and others. In villages, 'Gau Seva' is emerging as a new model for economic prosperity and self-reliance.
Focus on Green Fodder Availability
The Animal Husbandry Department is making rapid efforts to increase the availability of green fodder for farmers, livestock rearers, and grazing lands. Under this initiative, Napier grass root slips, berseem, and sorghum fodder seeds are being distributed among farmers and livestock rearers. Meshram said the state government aims to ensure year-round availability of nutritious and affordable green fodder, reducing farmers' costs and increasing milk production.
