Odisha Lab Technician's 24-Year Mission to Feed the Underprivileged
In the quiet town of Khariar, located in Nuapada district, Odisha, a remarkable story of compassion unfolds daily. Rajesh Kumar Podh, a 45-year-old laboratory technician, has dedicated the last 24 years to feeding underprivileged and mentally-challenged individuals three times a day. His unwavering commitment began in 2002 and continues to inspire his community.
How It All Started
Rajesh, a resident of Lalsahebpada in Khariar, opened a small pathology clinic in 2001 after completing his diploma. The following year, a life-changing incident occurred when he witnessed a mentally-challenged man searching through a garbage bin for food. Moved by this sight, Rajesh rushed home, prepared a meal, and fed the man. This act of kindness sparked a lifelong mission.
Daily Routine and Family Support
Initially, Rajesh cycled through the town, carrying food he prepared alongside his own meals. Today, he feeds 22 people daily, covering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. His wife, Haripriya, whom he married in 2010, has been an unwavering pillar of support. She manages the household and prepares additional meals for those Rajesh serves.
After returning from his clinic, Rajesh packs the food and sets out on his two-wheeler to distribute meals every day. In the morning, he often buys breakfast items, while lunch and dinner are cooked at home. He serves food on a plate with a glass of water, ensuring dignity in every meal.
Beyond Meals: Extended Generosity
Rajesh's generosity extends far beyond providing meals. He offers free diagnostic tests to poor patients at his clinic, collects leftover food from parties to serve to those in need, and distributes blankets during winter. In a testament to his deep compassion, he has even cremated three individuals who had no one else to care for them.
Over the years, his continuous efforts have drawn support from kind-hearted people in the community. In 2022, the Khariar Officers' Club gifted him a two-wheeler to aid his distribution efforts, recognizing his selfless service.
Personal Reflections and Future Commitment
Rajesh shared his motivation, stating, "I cannot see the pain of those helpless people. I will continue feeding them till the end of my life. I also want other people to feed and serve these helpless, underprivileged individuals. Some kind-hearted people support me in my mission."
His wife, Haripriya, expressed pride in her husband's work, saying, "I am proud of my husband as he has been feeding some helpless and mentally-challenged persons for the last 24 years. Our service to these people would continue till our last breath."
This story highlights how one person's dedication can create a ripple effect of kindness, encouraging others to contribute to the welfare of the underprivileged in their communities.
