Leopard Sighting Video Triggers Panic in Ganjam District Villages
A video capturing a suspected leopard perched atop a nearby hill has gone viral on social media, instilling fear among residents of Lanka and Sunakhala villages in the Patrapur block of Ganjam district, Odisha. The footage, recorded by a group of children during their playtime on Saturday afternoon, quickly spread online, leading to widespread concern and alarm in the local community.
Forest Officials Conduct Inquiry, Find No Concrete Evidence
Upon receiving the information, forest authorities swiftly dispatched a team to the location to investigate the claims. Sunny Khokhar, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Berhampur, stated that during their thorough inquiry on Sunday, officials could not locate any pug marks or reports of cattle lifting by the alleged big cat in the area. "After getting information, our team has rushed to the spot to conduct an inquiry. During the inquiry, they did not find the pug-mark of the big cat in the area. There was no complaint of the lifting of the cattle by the leopard in the same area," Khokhar explained.
Precautionary Measures and Vigilance Intensified
Despite the lack of physical evidence, forest officials are not taking any chances. They have implemented several precautionary steps to ensure public safety and monitor the situation closely:
- Maintaining strict vigilance on the animal's potential movements.
- Alerting nearby villagers to avoid teasing or provoking any wildlife.
- Installing two camera traps to identify the animal and track its activities, with plans to deploy additional units.
- Advising residents to remain calm and report any sightings immediately to forest authorities.
Manoj Kumar Patra, the Forest Range Officer of Samantiapalli, emphasized, "We have urged the villagers not to panic and to be vigilant on the movement of the animal. If they notice the movement of the big cat or any other wild animal, they should immediately inform the forest officials." He further cautioned against spreading unverified rumors regarding the presence of wild animals, stressing the importance of factual reporting to prevent unnecessary panic.
Background and Ongoing Monitoring
The DFO noted that leopards are known to inhabit the forested regions of this area, making such sightings plausible but requiring verification. The forest department's proactive approach includes continuous monitoring through camera traps and community engagement to balance wildlife conservation with public safety. Officials reassure that while the viral video has caused concern, there is no confirmed threat at this time, and they are prepared to respond swiftly to any developments.
