Shubhangi Atre: Craft Evolution, OTT Impact & Social Role

Shubhangi Atre, a familiar face on Indian television with notable roles in popular shows such as Do Hanson Ka Jodaa, Havan, Chidiya Ghar, and the long-running comedy series Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hain!, recently opened up about her journey as an actress. She shared insights into how her craft has transformed over the years, attributing this evolution to her rich experiences and the collaborative environment with her co-stars.

Evolution of Craft Through Experience and Observation

Reflecting on her career, Shubhangi emphasized that her artistic skills have matured significantly. "With experience of different kinds of events and situations, my craft has evolved," she stated. Having been part of Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hain for nearly a decade, she highlighted the learning opportunities it provided. "I learned a lot from every co-actor, from situations, and from life experiences. For sure, I think I have become calmer now," she added.

She elaborated on how her approach has shifted over time. "Earlier I was different, but now I observe more, I experience more, and I absorb things. All this helps in spontaneous performance. Your experiences help you grow professionally," Shubhangi explained. This focus on observation and absorption has become a cornerstone of her acting methodology, enabling more authentic and immediate portrayals on screen.

Key Qualities for Actors: Patience, Adaptability, and Reinvention

Drawing from her extensive time in the industry, Shubhangi stressed the importance of several essential traits for actors. She pointed out that patience is key, noting that "Acting is not only about talent; it is also about waiting for the right opportunity and staying strong during difficult times." Additionally, she emphasized the role of keen observation, stating, "An actor should also be a very good observer, because real emotions and behavior come from watching people and life closely."

She also highlighted the necessity for continuous reinvention. "We express emotions. So it is extremely important to re-explore and reinvent yourself," Shubhangi remarked. This need for adaptability is crucial in a dynamic industry. "Apart from this, adaptability is important because the industry keeps changing. Learning new things, understanding different platforms, and being open to feedback also help an actor grow," she added. She further mentioned that discipline, emotional strength, and good communication skills are invaluable for long-term success in the field.

Impact of OTT Platforms on Content and Opportunities

Shubhangi credited OTT platforms with revolutionizing the entertainment landscape, especially post-Covid. "After Covid, content from all over the world is in front of us. So the industry has to evolve according to the taste of the audience," she observed. She noted the distinct preferences of younger demographics, saying, "Gen Z and millennials have very different tastes. So I think now there is a bigger market, and the industry is changing and evolving. This is a very good and welcome change, because content really matters."

She expressed gratitude towards the audience for embracing diverse narratives and actors. "Digital platforms give actors more opportunities to show their talent, not just in one country but across the world. An actor can reach a global audience sitting in one place," Shubhangi explained. She also appreciated the creative depth offered by OTT roles, adding, "Also, roles on OTT platforms are often more realistic and layered, which helps actors grow creatively. Because of continuous content, actors can stay connected with the audience for a longer time, which helps in building a long and strong career."

Social Responsibility of Actors in Storytelling

With her experience, Shubhangi believes that actors carry a significant social responsibility. "The stories we choose can influence how people think and feel. Through our work, we can talk about important issues like equality, mental health, women's empowerment, and many other real-life problems," she stated. She emphasized the power of meaningful storytelling, noting, "When actors take part in meaningful stories, it helps create awareness and positive change. So it is important to balance entertainment with sensible and honest storytelling that reflects what is happening in society today."

Looking Ahead: Seeking Fresh and Challenging Roles

As for her future plans, Shubhangi is eager to explore new horizons. "I have moved on from my past work, and now I am really looking for something fresh, something different, something very challenging," she concluded. This forward-looking attitude underscores her commitment to growth and innovation in her acting career, as she continues to navigate the evolving entertainment industry.
