Tamil Film Producers Call Token Strike on May 2 Over Star Salaries

The Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) officially announced a token strike on May 2, 2026, igniting a major discussion across the Tamil film industry. The producers' body cited hefty salaries demanded by leading actors and technicians over the past three years as the primary reason for this decision.

Financial Strain on Producers

According to the council, many producers are facing substantial financial losses and struggling to continue making films. Despite repeated requests and discussions with the Nadigar Sangam (the actors' union), the issue remains unresolved. The producers council decided to proceed with the strike to draw attention to the growing financial pressure within the industry.

Push for Revenue Share Salary Model

The producers council has been urging top actors and technicians to adopt a revenue share salary system instead of demanding large fixed payments. Under this model, stars and technicians would receive a share of the film's profits after release. Producers believe this system can reduce financial risks and help more films succeed commercially. The council noted that this model has been successfully followed in the Hindi film industry for years by stars like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Ajay Devgn. Similar practices are also reportedly followed by several leading actors in Telugu cinema.

Producers Face Huge Losses

According to the TFPC, many Tamil producers cannot recover from losses after a single failed film. The council stated that, unlike in some other industries, leading stars and technicians rarely support struggling Tamil producers after a project fails. Producers also claimed that several actors prioritize projects from other language industries while local producers continue to face financial problems. As a result, many small and medium producers are reportedly unable to start new projects. The council emphasized that the token strike is meant to highlight these serious concerns and encourage healthy discussions within the industry.

Strike Details: No Shootings or Post-Production Work

As part of the token strike, no film shootings or post-production work will take place on May 2 across Tamil cinema. The Tamil Film Active Producers Association has extended full support to the protest. The TFPC also thanked FEFSI (Film Employees Federation of South India) and several cinema unions for cooperating with the strike announcement. Producers are now hoping that leading actors and technicians will understand the seriousness of the issue and come forward for talks soon. The council believes that only proper discussions and mutual understanding can lead to a smooth solution and improve the future of Tamil cinema production.
