Gujarati Cinema Makes History with First AI-Generated Feature Film 'The Iskoon Bridge'
In a groundbreaking move for regional Indian cinema, writer-director Chetan Chauhan is set to debut with 'The Iskoon Bridge,' the first AI-generated Gujarati feature film, scheduled for release later this year. The film stars Rishi Shekhawat and Aditi Pandit as the lead characters, promising a unique cinematic experience for audiences.
Overcoming Initial Skepticism with Confidence
Chetan Chauhan, who will make his directorial debut with this project, revealed initial doubts about the venture. "Initially, we were a bit sceptical, as we always tend to wonder, log kya kahenge (what will people say)," he admitted. However, after reviewing the early footage, his confidence soared. "I am now confident about directing the first AI-generated Gujarati feature film," he stated, highlighting the film's genre as a paranormal thriller—a relatively unexplored area in the industry.
AI Technology and Human Collaboration in Filmmaking
The film leverages the proprietary GoSkripto-GS2 AI model (version 2.0) to revolutionize content creation. This AI system was used to:
- Generate video sequences and create visual storyboards.
- Produce AI-driven voice narration synchronized with the visuals.
- Interpret the script and automatically structure the storyboard, streamlining the production process.
Chetan emphasized that the project is "a beautiful blend of AI and human touch." While visuals and images are AI-generated, other elements like the story, dialogues, music, and editing involve significant human input. He credited his friend Kunnal Shah, the prompt team and creative head, for providing immense support in guiding prompts, refining visuals, and making final creative decisions.
Ensuring Authenticity with Expert Partnerships
To add credibility to the paranormal thriller, the production team has partnered with the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU). This collaboration aims to ensure authenticity in the film's narrative, enhancing its appeal to cinephiles. The film features an impressive 82 AI-generated characters, showcasing the scale of AI integration.
From Live-Action to AI-Driven Innovation
Chetan originally planned a live-action film and approached several actors from the Gujarati film industry. "However, it was a mixed experience, and their responses left me a bit disappointed," he recalled. A turning point came when a friend's tech company offered to create a teaser using their AI model for investor pitches. "The result was mind-blowing, and that's how this idea came up," he explained, noting the cost-effectiveness and benefits of AI technology.
Addressing Industry Criticism and Embracing Change
The film has not been without controversy, drawing parallels to Hollywood debates around AI-generated actress Tilly Norwood. Chetan faced criticism from some industry quarters, with concerns that AI-generated films could have negative long-term impacts. "I don't believe in this at all," he countered. "We have to adapt to changing times, and if you are doing good work, you will survive, irrespective of whether you are using AI or not." He stressed the importance of innovation in staying relevant in the evolving entertainment landscape.
As 'The Iskoon Bridge' prepares to hit screens, it marks a significant milestone in Indian cinema, blending cutting-edge AI with traditional storytelling to push creative boundaries.
