Art Exhibition 'The Afterlife of Materials' at IIT Kanpur

Kanpur: An art exhibition titled ‘The Afterlife of Materials: Stories in Form’ was recently inaugurated at the Approach Cell, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. The exhibition showcases the work of Shailly Sangal, an emerging ceramic artist from Kanpur, along with four design interns associated with Ranjit Singh Rozi Shiksha Kendra.

Collaboration with Local Artisans

Shailly Sangal has been working closely with local potters of Bithoor for the past two years on terracotta craft and has contributed towards building an artisan cluster through her design and process interventions. The exhibition presents the innovative works of four design interns from Ranjit Singh Rozi Shiksha Kendra, each of whom has worked with a traditional craft cluster facing decline and explored new possibilities through design interventions.

Exhibition Highlights

  • The exhibition emphasizes the transformation of materials and the stories they carry.
  • It highlights the revival of traditional crafts through modern design approaches.
  • Visitors can witness the fusion of contemporary art with age-old terracotta techniques.

The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving traditional crafts and supporting local artisans. The interns have demonstrated how design can breathe new life into dying art forms.
