A bronze statue honouring the legendary playback singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam was unveiled at Ravindra Bharathi in Hyderabad on Tuesday. The event marked a significant milestone: 60 years since the icon sang his first Telugu song. The statue now stands installed next to that of another musical giant, Ghantasala, creating a lasting tribute to two pillars of South Indian music.
A Musical Evening of Tribute and Memory
The unveiling ceremony was followed by a heartfelt evening filled with live performances of SPB's most iconic numbers. The stage was graced by leading singers and composers from the Telugu film industry, who came together to celebrate his vast legacy. Performers included MM Keeravani, Mani Sharma, Tanikella Bharani, S. Thaman, Sunitha Upadrasta, and SPB's son, SP Charan.
The event was more than just a musical night; it was a deep dive into the personal and professional influence SPB had on generations of artists. Performers and colleagues shared touching anecdotes, recalling his immense discipline, personal warmth, and the mentorship he generously offered throughout his illustrious career.
Voices from the Ceremony: Remembering a Legend
Music composer S. Thaman expressed his profound connection, stating, "All of us stand here because of Balu garu. Being at Ravindra Bharathi on this occasion filled me with immense joy; this land felt even more sacred. I have been travelling alongside him since 1996, and I carry countless cherished memories with him."
Oscar-winning composer MM Keeravani shared his personal bond, saying, "This event was a celebration for music lovers and for everyone who respects the Telugu language and values the art of music. I see SP Balasubrahmanyam as a guru, a mentor and a friend. The bond we shared goes far beyond words."
SP Charan, the late singer's son, offered an emotional perspective: "If I had to choose which side of him I feel closest to, SPB the singer or SPB the father, I would choose the latter. As his son, I shared countless emotional moments and conversations with him about life, stories, and music. His legacy will live on, and I remain proud to call him my father."
Singer Sunitha Upadrasta noted the statue's placement, saying, "Seeing SPB sir’s statue installed right next to Ghantasala garu fills my heart with joy. There isn’t a single day in our lives without his music. What truly set him apart was the way he treated everyone with equal respect."
SP Sailaja, a singer and voice artiste, highlighted his guiding principles: "For all singers, Balu garu is an inspiration... He always said, 'speak in Telugu and do not forget Telugu.' He taught us, singers and musicians, how to be disciplined in the field which we still follow."
Controversy Shadows the Celebration
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, the decision to install the statue at Ravindra Bharathi was not without controversy. On Sunday, the eve of the installation, activists staged protests against honouring SPB at this venue.
The protestors, led by Telangana Kranthidal founder Sangam Reddy Prithviraj, referenced a 2004 incident where SPB reportedly declined to sing 'Jaya Jayahe Telangana', a poem by Andesri. The refusal came after the poet would not remove a line demanding statehood for Telangana. "SPB represents a voice opposed to the Telangana movement," Prithviraj stated.
Kalvakuntla Kavitha, president of Telangana Jagruthi Samithi, echoed the sentiment, suggesting the statue would be better placed elsewhere or replaced with one of a Telangana artist. Despite these objections, the unveiling ceremony proceeded as scheduled on Tuesday.
A Legacy Cemented in Bronze
The installation of SP Balasubrahmanyam's statue serves as a permanent, physical acknowledgment of his enduring influence on Indian music and cinema. For his family, colleagues, and millions of fans, the statue fulfills a wish and provides a place for remembrance. It stands as a testament to a voice that defined an era and a man whose humility and talent left an indelible mark on all who knew him and his work. The event successfully blended joyous celebration with poignant reflection, ensuring that the legend of SPB continues to inspire future generations.
