NAAD Festival Merges Classical Roots with Modern Sounds

NAAD Classical Music Festival Celebrates Tradition and Innovation

The three-day NAAD Classical Music Festival, meticulously curated by renowned tabla maestro Bickram Ghosh, concluded over the weekend with a spectacular line-up that celebrated the vast dimensions of Indian classical music. Conceptualized as a classically driven event, NAAD presented the art form in its purest essence while simultaneously showcasing genres that have evolved from it, along with innovative collaborative performances that culminated in a classical–folk finale.

Curatorial Vision: Bridging Eras and Sounds

Bickram Ghosh emphasized the significance of this year's edition, stating, "This year’s NAAD has been the most curatorially important edition for me. We juxtaposed fading traditions like the sarangi and surbahar with emerging sounds such as the electric sarod, electric sitar, and even classical music played on the iPad." He elaborated on the festival's core philosophy, highlighting classical music's inherent depth and elasticity, which allows it to collaborate with diverse elements. Through NAAD, the aim was to demonstrate how tradition, technology, folk, and film music can harmoniously converge while preserving the classical foundation intact.

Innovative Instruments: The Electric Sarod Debut

A standout feature of the festival was the debut of the electric sarod, introduced by musician Indrayuddh Majumder. Reflecting on his inspiration, Majumder shared, "I had been thinking about this for a long time. Since I listen to music from across the world, I realised the sarod is an instrument that blends beautifully with many others. That inspired me to create the electric sarod." He described its unique placement and soundscape, clarifying that it is not intended to replace the traditional sarod but to explore new possibilities with the instrument. Majumder expressed gratitude for the opportunity to unveil it at NAAD, marking a significant moment in the festival's exploration of musical evolution.
