Why Ishaan Khatter Ate Real Green Chilies for Dhadak

Bollywood actors' action sequences often receive widespread love and public praise on social media. However, what many people do not realize is that numerous other acts deserve equal applause, where actors step out of their comfort zones and go beyond the obvious to make a scene realistic. For instance, when actor Ishaan Khatter ate green chilies for a food competition in his film Dhadak, handling the heat during and after the shoot was a real challenge.

Why Did Ishaan Khatter Eat Green Chilies?

Recalling his shooting days from Dhadak, the actor told Kunal Vijayakar in an interview for his YouTube show Khaane Main Kya Hai that during the shoot, he had to eat a plate full of green chilies for a scene, albeit with a twist. He called eating pepper his ode to Dhadak. He said, "I ate chilies in the food-eating competition in the film. I ate the actual chilies. I was given jaggery and ghee with chilies." He added, "My team tried to neutralize the spice so that we could go through six hours of shooting an eating scene and not die."

How Exactly Do Ghee and Jaggery Help?

According to experts, capsaicin found in chili is oil-soluble, and ghee is a rich, clarified butter that works well with spicy foods because its fat binds to capsaicin. This lessens the spiciness of chili and makes the heat much more tolerable by forming a calming coating in your mouth and throat. And jaggery offers immediate relief. When ghee and jaggery are combined, the sweetness of jaggery soothes your taste buds and the fat in ghee melts the heat from the chili.
