For actor Waseem Mushtaq, World Music Day brings back memories of his first-ever stage performance, long before acting became his profession. Known for shows such as Ram Bhavan, Sasural Simar Ka 2, Kahaan Hum Kahaan Tum, Spy Bahu, Mere Angne Mein and Amrit Manthan, Waseem says music has always been an important part of his life.
Special Memory of World Music Day
Recalling a special memory associated with the day, he says, “I had just joined a new boarding school when my music teacher selected me to sing a funny Punjabi song on Music Day. Punjabi was completely alien to me at that time, but I somehow learned the song and performed it. It turned out to be my first stage performance.”
Practice Makes Perfect
Over the years, Waseem has remained deeply connected to music and believes there is only one way to improve as a singer. “Practice, practice and practice. It’s like exercise for your vocal cords. The more you sing, the stronger your voice becomes. There are no shortcuts. Singing on stage requires a lot of preparation because there are no retakes. Once you're performing live, there’s no room for mistakes. That’s why rehearsals are extremely important,” he shares.
Music Philosophy: Soulful, Honest, Timeless
When asked to define the kind of music he wants to create, Waseem chooses three words: soulful, honest and timeless. “Music has to touch people emotionally. It should come from the heart and be original. Most importantly, good music remains timeless. It continues to heal and connect with people even decades later,” he says.
Music Came Before Acting
Interestingly, Waseem reveals that music entered his life before acting. “I had a band during my college days and was always inclined towards music. But once acting happened, I hardly had any time left for it,” he says. A few years ago, however, he consciously decided to reconnect with his musical side.
“I realised that making music gives me immense peace. Acting will always remain a part of my life, but I want to devote more time to music now. I spent the last year working on it and have five original tracks ready. I’ll be releasing them one by one, and I’m very excited about this new journey,” he says.
