Tom Hanks, the two-time Oscar-winning actor, has admitted that he struggles to watch many of his own films, citing specific scenes that he finds unsatisfactory. In a recent interview to promote 'Toy Story 5', Hanks opened up about the creative missteps he perceives in his work, offering a rare glimpse into his self-critical process.
Hanks on Career Mistakes and Unwatchable Scenes
During an appearance on the podcast 'The Rest Is Entertainment', Hanks reflected on his decades-long career, noting that while every film he has made was a profound experience, not all of them meet his personal standards. He explained that he rarely rewatches his movies after their initial release because they never change, and some contain moments he cannot bear to see again. "I do not watch these movies after the first time, really, 'cause they never change, and there are movies that have moments in [them] that I cannot watch because I didn't get there," Hanks said. He added that these moments are often the big dramatic beats where he feels he failed to deliver the performance he intended.
Specific Regret: 'Cast Away' Reunion Scene
One of the most notable examples Hanks cited was his 2000 film 'Cast Away', directed by Robert Zemeckis. In the movie, Hanks plays Chuck Noland, a FedEx executive stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash. The film culminates in an emotional reunion between Chuck and his former fiancée Kelly Frears, played by Helen Hunt. Hanks revealed that this scene is particularly difficult for him to watch. "Chuck is back in Kelly's house, and he gives her her watch back, and there's a moment where I just think I'm not there," he said. He described a specific gesture he made as "false" and more reflective of himself than the character. "All it is is a turnaround on me. I do this gesture that I just think is false, and is me, and is not Chuck. If the movie is on, I will get up and leave the room before that scene comes on." Hanks noted that he only realized the mistake after the film was completed and he watched the final cut, but by then it was too late to reshoot.
Latest Project: 'Toy Story 5'
Hanks recently reprised his iconic role as Woody the Sheriff in 'Toy Story 5', the latest installment in the beloved animated franchise. The film's plot involves the toys facing off against an AI-powered tablet that becomes Bonnie's new favorite toy. The voice cast includes Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, Elisabeth Shue, and Jack Patten, among others. Hanks has voiced Woody since the first 'Toy Story' film in 1995, and the character remains one of his most enduring roles.
