A tragic incident occurred on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro when a technician working on the setup of a stage for pop superstar Shakira's free concert was killed. The man, who was part of the construction crew, suffered severe crushing injuries to his legs due to a lifting system malfunction, according to authorities and organizers.
Details of the Accident
For weeks, workers have been assembling a massive stage on the sands of Copacabana beach, where thousands of fans from around the world are expected to gather on May 2 for Shakira's performance as part of her record-breaking world tour. Witnesses reported seeing the structure collapse suddenly. "Out of nowhere, we saw people running, and when we looked, the structure was on the ground," said Antonio Marcos Ferreira dos Santos, 51, who was on the beach at the time. "People were saying that a man had gotten trapped underneath. People rushed over to pull him out."
Workers managed to free the man, who was rushed to a hospital. However, concert organizer Bonus Track stated, "Unfortunately, the technician passed away in the hospital." Shakira has not yet commented on the incident.
Concert to Proceed Despite Tragedy
Following the worker's death, construction of the stage resumed on Monday. Concert organizers expressed their support and solidarity with the company responsible for the stage construction, its staff, and the victim's family. Despite the accident, many beachgoers believe the show should go on. "It is a sad thing that this happened, but the concert should go on," said Anita Costa, a 41-year-old singer. Another beachgoer echoed the sentiment, expressing sorrow for the worker's death but supporting the decision to continue with the planned concert.
The incident has cast a shadow over the highly anticipated event, but organizers remain committed to delivering the performance while ensuring safety measures are reviewed.
