First Lady Melania Trump joined President Trump in a separate rebuke of the media, censuring late-night host Jimmy Kimmel on Monday after he had joked that she looked like an 'expectant widow' in a parody of the aborted White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner that he made before the security scare.
Kimmel's Satirical Monologue
Kimmel delivered a satirical monologue before the event, imagining how the annual dinner might have unfolded. He made several jokes about Trump, calling him a 'drama queen' before turning to the First Lady. He quipped, 'Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.' He also congratulated her on what he called 'the world’s first motionless picture,' a jab at her film project, and took other potshots at her.
First Lady's Response
On Monday, the First Lady issued an unusually direct statement calling the jokes 'cruel and irresponsible.' She accused Kimmel of trivializing a moment when lives were at risk and warned that such humor 'normalizes mockery of violence against public officials and their families.'
Context of Security Scare
The controversy follows an armed attempt to breach security at the WHCA venue, prompting the evacuation of President Trump and other officials. While no fatalities were reported, the incident has intensified scrutiny of both security and political rhetoric.
Criticism of Selective Outrage
Critics of the president, however, argue the outrage is selective, pointing to numerous instances in which Trump has used combative language at rallies and in speeches that they say has encouraged or condoned violence, while mocking the death of his critics. 'Good, I’m glad he’s dead… he can no longer hurt innocent people,' Trump said recently about the death of former FBI Director Robert Mueller. Kimmel has not apologized so far.
Political Flashpoint
The episode underscores a deeply polarized climate in which even satire amid crisis becomes a political flashpoint.
