Harmeet Dhillon, the Indian-origin assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department and a close aide of President Donald Trump, found herself at the center of a social media storm after making light-hearted comments following a shooting incident at a White House dinner. The event, which took place at the Washington Hilton hotel, saw a shooter targeting administration officials, prompting a swift response from the Secret Service.
Dhillon's Controversial Post
On her personal X account, Dhillon posted a message that many perceived as insensitive given the circumstances. She asked, “Every woman at the event last night low key wondering if they can repeat that outfit at the do-over, or use it for another red carpet event … because did it really 'count'?” The post drew a mixed reaction, with several users expressing disappointment at her trivializing the serious situation.
One user commented, “This post from you disappoints me. I agree that people there may be thinking that since everything is ok, but some things don’t belong on social media and are better left said to your close friends. I lost some professional respect for you just now.” Others, however, appreciated her humor and admitted they had similar thoughts.
Dhillon's Official Response
On her official account, Dhillon struck a more serious tone, describing her experience during the incident. She revealed that she had sustained a bruise on her head after Secret Service agents sprinted across tables and chairs while she ducked under a table belonging to the Washington Post. “The Secret Service was very impressive last night, sprinting across the extremely crowded room to secure the scene. Everyone was calm and followed their orders to get down and get out of the way. It could have been so much worse. Every day I am grateful for law enforcement!” she wrote, expressing gratitude for the law enforcement response.
Background of the Incident
The shooter, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, told police that he was targeting “administration officials” at the event. He was staying at the Washington Hilton hotel where the dinner was held. The incident raised concerns about security at high-profile political events.
