Biryani Dispute Leads to Tragic Suicide of Couple in Visakhapatnam
In a heartbreaking incident in Visakhapatnam, a couple ended their lives following a bitter argument over biryani late Tuesday night, leaving their four-year-old son orphaned. The deceased have been identified as K Balaram (33) and Priyanka (27), residents of the Srinagar area near Rama Talkies. According to police, Balaram's addiction to alcohol was the root cause of the family's destruction.
Background of the Couple
Balaram, originally from Kalingapatnam in Srikakulam district, married Priyanka five years ago after a love affair. The couple moved from Kalingapatnam to Vizag city in search of livelihood. However, Balaram's alcohol addiction led to frequent heated arguments with his wife, creating a tense home environment.
The Fateful Night
The incident unfolded when Balaram, after consuming a couple of drinks, returned home and demanded that Priyanka prepare biryani. Priyanka refused, stating that making biryani at such a late hour was not feasible. An argument ensued, and Priyanka's mother, Rajeswari, attempted to pacify the couple. She eventually left to bring biryani from outside. During her absence, Priyanka scolded Balaram for his drinking habit, blaming it for forcing her mother to go out late at night. The argument escalated, and in a fit of despair, Priyanka hanged herself from a ceiling fan. Upon witnessing his wife's act, Balaram also hanged himself from another fan.
Child's Innocent Account
The couple's four-year-old son, who was present during the incident, told the police that first his mother "played cradle" (hanging from the fan) and his father brought her down. Then, his father "played the same game." The child's words left the locals and police shocked. The boy is now orphaned and under the care of relatives.
Police Investigation
Police have sent the bodies for postmortem and are investigating the case. Authorities are also looking into the role of alcohol in triggering the tragic events. The incident highlights the devastating impact of addiction on families.
