The veteran star, known for her iconic roles and timeless appeal, offered profound insights into how the industry has transformed since her heyday.
Embracing Social Media and Connecting with New Generations
When asked about her recent social media activity and its impact, Zeenat Aman revealed that joining Instagram at her children's persuasion brought unexpected rewards. "The involvement of my fans on social media has brought me great joy and a sense of responsibility towards them," she shared. This digital connection has allowed her to bridge generational gaps and engage with younger audiences in meaningful ways.
The Evolution of Women's Roles in Bollywood
Reflecting on how Bollywood portrays women today compared to her early career, Zeenat offered a nuanced perspective. "Commercial cinema is definitely male dominated. In my time, female actors had little to do," she acknowledged. However, she highlighted significant progress: "Today, as there are streaming platforms, a wider variety of films are being made. Now, stronger, nuanced and varying roles are being written for women."
She expressed particular pleasure at seeing more women working in various roles throughout the film industry, marking a substantial shift from her earlier experiences.
Remembering Uttam Kumar and Timeless Artistry
Speaking about legendary actor Uttam Kumar, whom she has often praised, Zeenat explained his enduring appeal. "Uttam Kumar was a prolific artiste whose career has spanned over five generations. He was a shining example of what any artiste should aspire for," she said. She attributed his timeless quality to his "effortless and charming" performances that continue to resonate across generations.
Selecting Projects and Career Philosophy
When discussing her current approach to choosing projects, Zeenat revealed she considers multiple factors. "There are multiple things I look into. For instance, who is the character I'll be portraying? Who are the people that I am working with? How long will I be committed to a project? Is it going to be a joyous experience?" This thoughtful selection process reflects her evolved perspective on work and creativity.
Advice for Young Actors Navigating Modern Challenges
Zeenat offered valuable guidance to emerging actors dealing with fame, social media pressures, and personal life balance. "Social media has brought with it a lot of pressure for young actors today. It is important to trust your gut along with your intellect when it comes to navigating this," she advised. Her central message emphasized: "Most importantly, seek joy in whatever you do."
Regarding the pressure to maintain certain appearances in the digital age, she suggested: "Don't do it from a vanity point of view, but from a health and longevity point of view."
Looking Back with Perspective and Forward with Anticipation
Reflecting on her earlier work, Zeenat admitted: "Honestly, when I look back at some of my films in the past, I cringe. I have changed so much as a person and as a woman that I certainly would not have made some of the choices that I had made back then." Yet she balanced this with appreciation: "But at the same time, I will say that I was just very happy to be consistently working."
She noted significant improvements in working conditions, recalling that during her era, "nobody had vanity vans" and actors lacked "the privilege of having instantaneous replay of their work" due to analog filmmaking limitations.
Supporting Emerging Talent and Family Dynamics
About launching Ritabhari Chakraborty's calendar, Zeenat expressed enthusiasm: "She's a vibrant, dynamic talented young actor, who is straddling both worlds of cinema – in Bengali and in Hindi. I was happy to participate in the launch of this calendar. It resonates with me because I believe in the embodiment of woman power and I like to support it."
On personal relationships, she shared an evolving dynamic with her children: "I now relate to my kids as adults, as my friends. And I value their opinions in spite of them sometimes treating me like an eight-year-old girl."
Regarding future projects, Zeenat teased: "There's plenty in the pipeline, so my fans will just have to stay tuned!" Her continued engagement with cinema and her audience demonstrates her enduring passion for the art form that defined her career.
