Vir Das on Aamir Khan's Meticulous Filmmaking Approach

Vir Das Shares Insights on Aamir Khan's Producer Role for Directorial Debut

International Emmy winner Vir Das recently discussed his experience working with producer Aamir Khan on his directorial debut film 'Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos'. The actor-comedian revealed fascinating details about Khan's meticulous approach to filmmaking during a recent screening event.

Blunt Audience Reactions at Early Screenings

Das admitted he received some direct feedback from viewers at test screenings. "What the hell have you made? That is a question I heard quite often," Das said with a laugh. He took these reactions positively, noting that everyone seemed to be laughing throughout the film. The comedian appears to be handling the transition to director with his characteristic humor intact.

Aamir Khan's Rigorous Development Process

Despite liking the script initially, Aamir Khan insisted on an extensive development phase before giving final approval. Das explained the detailed process:

  1. Five to six detailed narration sessions where Khan asked fundamental questions about story and characters
  2. A small budget allocation to shoot five key scenes from the movie
  3. Only after reviewing these scenes in fully edited, color-corrected form did Khan greenlight the project

"When we showed those scenes, graded, colour corrected, edited to him, he greenlit the film," Das revealed about the crucial moment.

Thirty Test Screenings for Refinement

Khan's involvement continued well beyond project approval. The producer organized approximately thirty test screenings with diverse audience groups. Das described how Khan instructed viewers to focus only on problems with the film, not praise. These screenings directly influenced the third and fourth cuts of the movie.

Learning from a Creative Lighthouse

Despite the intense process, Das considers the experience invaluable. "The win is learning how to make a film from Aamir Khan," he reflected. Das expressed hope that every wandering artist might find their own creative lighthouse like Khan.

Why Spy Comedies Took Time to Materialize

Das explained why 'Happy Patel' took years to develop. Inspired by films like 'Johnny English', the concept first came to him in 2009. However, he felt Indian audiences needed time to embrace the spy genre fully. "Culture has to be mainstream for comedy to counter it," Das noted, pointing to recent successful spy films that paved the way.

The script finally came together with co-writer Amogh Ranadive in the same month that 'Pathaan' released in 2023, marking what Das saw as the right cultural moment for his spy comedy.
