Shobhaa De Delivers Blunt Assessment of 'Dhurandhar 2'
Following the release of the highly anticipated sequel 'Dhurandhar 2', the film has garnered widespread acclaim from fans and celebrities alike, but not all reviews have been glowing. Prominent columnist and author Shobhaa De has now weighed in with a candid critique, offering a contrasting perspective on the Aditya Dhar-directed action thriller starring Ranveer Singh.
A Sequel That Falls Short of Its Predecessor
In a detailed video shared on her Instagram account, Shobhaa De compared 'Dhurandhar 2' to its predecessor, asserting that the original film possessed greater depth and suspense, which effectively kept audiences engaged with the characters. She expressed disappointment with the sequel's lack of novelty, noting that it leaned heavily toward predictability, diminishing the viewing experience.
"Maybe it was the newness then, in this one, there was a bit of a deja vu. I could almost predict what's going to happen next which is never good. Good cinema is about keeping you tense and making you wonder. People have called it a masterpiece. Sorry, it's not a masterpiece, at least not for me," Shobhaa stated emphatically.
Praise for Performances Amidst Criticism
Despite her overall critique, Shobhaa De did not withhold praise for certain aspects of the film. She highlighted Arjun's performance as a standout, remarking that he "chewed up everyone, including Ranveer. Sorry Ranveer, but he did." Additionally, she commended Sanjay Dutt for his portrayal, describing his act as controlled, menacing, and flawless.
However, she pointed out a significant flaw in the absence of Akshaye Khanna's character, Rehman Dakait, from the sequel. She argued that this omission affected the film's overall style and charm, referencing the iconic FA9LA dance from the first film as an irreplaceable element.
"Without Rehman Dakait, the style was not there. The wonderful impromptu dance was not there, there was a version of the Baloch dance, but it was nowhere near that one," she explained.
Script and Execution Under Scrutiny
Shobhaa De did not hold back in her assessment of the film's writing and execution. According to her, the script lacked grip, leading to many viewers losing attention during screenings. She criticized the music as predictable and noted the absence of memorable tracks like "Ramba Ho Ho Ho" and "Shararat", though she appreciated the use of "Rasputin."
In her Instagram caption, she described the film as overly explanatory, likening it to "tutoring school kids on how baddies operate." She added that the dialogues felt too obvious, relying heavily on clichés and familiar tropes. The action sequences, she noted, seemed excessive at times, with frequent car explosions reminiscent of Rohit Shetty's signature style.
Attention to Detail and Climax Concerns
Shobhaa De also highlighted smaller details that caught her eye, such as Ranveer Singh's neatly styled hair even during intense combat scenes, which she found distracting. While acknowledging a few smart twists in the plot, she questioned the effectiveness of the climax set in Pathankot, calling it an "anti-climax" that failed to deliver the expected impact.
Her review underscores a broader sentiment that while 'Dhurandhar 2' has its moments, it struggles to match the originality and suspense of the first film. As the entertainment world continues to buzz with mixed reactions, Shobhaa De's insights add a nuanced layer to the ongoing discourse surrounding this blockbuster sequel.
