Shekhar Kapur Opens Up on Why Yash Raj Films Abandoned Long-Delayed 'Paani' Project

In a recent interview, acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has finally shed light on the reasons behind the indefinite shelving of his ambitious futuristic film 'Paani', a project that has remained in development limbo for over a decade. The dystopian drama, set in a water-scarce world of 2050, was initially reported to be moving forward in April 2014 with Sushant Singh Rajput replacing Hrithik Roshan as the male lead.

A Production That Never Began

Kapur revealed that despite extensive preparations, the film's production was halted before it could even commence. "I couldn't even start Paani's production," Kapur stated, distinguishing it from other shelved projects that were abandoned midway. He had already invested six months rehearsing with Sushant Singh Rajput when Yash Raj Films made their fateful decision.

"After hearing their decision, I went back to the West. I had only come to India to do Paani. However, I haven't abandoned the project," Kapur emphasized, maintaining hope for the film's eventual realization despite the lengthy delay.

The Creative Impasse with YRF

The director detailed a crucial conversation with YRF head Aditya Chopra that ultimately led to the studio withdrawing from the project. Their agreement had granted Kapur creative control while Chopra managed business aspects, but this arrangement proved unsustainable for the studio's working style.

"Then one day, he called me for breakfast and said, 'Shekhar, what I have seen at YRF is that, if I don't stand behind the director all the time, things don't run well and the film doesn't turn out well. Hence, it has become my habit. But I can't stand behind you like that,'" Kapur recalled Chopra explaining.

Kapur acknowledged the validity of Chopra's position, noting that their agreement specifically designated it as "my film." When Chopra admitted he probably couldn't maintain his usual hands-on approach, both parties mutually agreed that YRF would not proceed with the project.

A Matter of Creative Differences, Not Conflict

The filmmaker clarified that the decision stemmed from natural creative divergences between two established professionals rather than any personal dispute. "It's a simple matter. Since we couldn't stay together creatively, it was decided that YRF would not make it. That's how Paani hit a roadblock. But I haven't abandoned it totally," Kapur explained, maintaining his commitment to the visionary project.

Remembering Sushant Singh Rajput's Dedication

Reflecting on his late lead actor, Kapur shared that he learned of Sushant Singh Rajput's tragic passing in 2020 while in Bhimtal, Uttarakhand. The director praised Rajput's professional commitment, describing him as "very obsessive about the role" and exactly what he needed as a director.

"He was an obsessive actor. As a director, that's what I needed. I didn't notice anything else abnormal about him. That may also be because I didn't know him personally," Kapur noted, acknowledging the limits of their professional relationship while honoring the actor's dedication to his craft.

Nearly twelve years after initial reports suggested production was imminent, and more than five years since Rajput's passing, 'Paani' remains one of Bollywood's most intriguing unrealized projects—a dystopian vision stalled by creative differences rather than creative failure.
