Rajpal Yadav Advocates for Prison Smoking Rooms After Release from Tihar Jail
Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav expressed gratitude to the film industry and his fans for their unwavering support following his release from Tihar Jail. The actor, who was incarcerated in connection with a cheque-bounce case, made a heartfelt appeal for the introduction of designated smoking areas within prison facilities.
Post-Release Statements and Prison Reform Suggestions
Speaking to PTI Video from his ancestral village in Shahjahanpur district, Yadav highlighted the overwhelming love he received from people during his time behind bars. He emphasized that prisons should serve as centers for reformation, offering structured opportunities for inmates to change their lives. However, he acknowledged that the law must remain supreme for those unwilling to reform.
"It is often difficult to judge from outside who is a hardened criminal and who made a one-time mistake," Yadav remarked, shedding light on the complexities of the justice system.
Call for Smoking Facilities in Correctional Institutions
The actor specifically urged prison authorities to establish smoking rooms inside jails, drawing a parallel to similar facilities available at railway stations and airports. "There should be designated smoking areas inside jails, similar to facilities at railway stations and airports," he stated. Yadav clarified that he was not promoting tobacco use, noting that he had attempted to quit smoking multiple times himself.
Legal and Personal Updates from the Actor
Yadav announced that his legal counsel, advocate Bhaskar Upadhyay, would handle all official responses to legal inquiries. He plans to refrain from speaking to the media for the next two days due to a family wedding, with a press conference scheduled for later to address further questions.
Reaffirming his roots, Yadav declared, "I was born in India, have never changed my passport, and continue to remain a voter in my village." He added, "I want to increase my earnings, not change my currency," seeking time rather than sympathy from the public.
Background of the Legal Case and Financial Details
Rajpal Yadav, renowned for his roles in films such as "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi," "Waqt," "Phir Hera Pheri," "Partner," "Bhool Bhulaiyaa," "Hungama," and "Chup Chup Ke," was sent to jail last week after the Delhi High Court rejected his plea for additional time to repay an outstanding amount in a cheque bouncing case. He is required to pay nearly Rs 9 crore to the complainant, M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd.
On Monday, the Delhi High Court suspended his sentence until March 18, permitting his release from Tihar Jail. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma issued the order after noting that Yadav had deposited Rs 1.5 crore into the complainant's bank account.
Support from the Film Fraternity
Following his surrender to Tihar Jail authorities, actors Sonu Sood and Gurmeet Choudhary, along with music composer Rao Inderjit Yadav, extended financial assistance to his family. They also appealed to others to offer support during this challenging period.
Yadav concluded with a light-hearted note about his public image, saying, "Laugh at Rajpal Yadav or laugh because of Rajpal Yadav." He expressed no concern if his photos or videos benefited others, maintaining his characteristic humor despite the circumstances.
