Prosenjit Chatterjee Denies 72-Hour Ban Deadline Amid Tollywood Tensions
On Sunday evening, veteran actor Prosenjit Chatterjee responded to fellow actor Dev's public ultimatum regarding an unofficial ban on artists Anirban Bhattacharya and Riddhi Sen. During a gathering at a Tollygunge studio held in memory of the late Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, Prosenjit firmly stated that he never committed to any 72-hour timeline to resolve the issue.
"I don't think I have taken or given any 72 hours challenge to anyone as I am nobody to do so or have the authority to do so. Only Dev can enlighten us about this 72 hours claim," Prosenjit declared, addressing the escalating controversy within the Bengali film industry.
Background of the Dispute
The situation intensified after Dev took to social media following an April 7 industry meeting convened to seek answers regarding Rahul Banerjee's death. On his platforms, Dev issued a 72-hour deadline to Prosenjit, urging him to help lift the alleged ban on Anirban Bhattacharya, Riddhi Sen, and others.
Prosenjit clarified that at the April 7 meeting, his sole advice was to postpone discussions on the ban while the industry was still grieving. "Concerns around ban culture are valid and need to be addressed. We've already started work on that, but this isn't the right time to take up the issue," he explained, emphasizing the need for sensitivity during this period.
Understanding the Unofficial Ban
Actors Anirban Bhattacharya and Riddhi Sen are reportedly facing non-cooperation from members of the Federation, stemming from broader disagreements between the Federation and independent filmmakers. Key issues include:
- Excessive control over film shoots, crew selection, and production decisions.
- Anirban's involvement in a group of directors who approached the Calcutta High Court over these matters.
- Riddhi's troubles, which began after a social media post in November 2025, leading to Federation demands for an apology.
The fallout has resulted in technicians refusing to work with both actors, causing shoot cancellations and delays. Legally, the Calcutta High Court ruled in September that preventing someone from working is illegal and that no one can interfere with an artist's livelihood.
Dev's Stance and Industry Impact
Dev has been vocal in opposing all bans, asserting at a recent meeting that several banned artists could return to work within 72 hours if Prosenjit assisted. He later amplified this on social media. Dev also confirmed that his upcoming directorial debut will feature Anirban Bhattacharya, regardless of the ban.
"I had advised Dev to wait for a few days, as emotions are running high. I feel disappointed that the matter was made public without discussing it with me first," Prosenjit remarked, highlighting the lack of private dialogue.
Dev further urged the Artists' Forum to consider the consequences for nearly 600 workers affected by the non-cooperation move against a production house linked to Rahul's death. He argued that targeting individuals should not jeopardize hundreds of jobs.
Emotional Stand on Production House Ban
On a related note, Prosenjit addressed the Artists' Forum's refusal to work with producers Leena Gangopadhyay and Saibal Banerjee, linked to Rahul's death. He clarified that this is not an official ban but a collective emotional response.
At Sunday's meeting, attended by around 900 members, nearly all expressed feeling unsafe working with the two individuals, submitting written statements to that effect. Absentees sent emails conveying similar sentiments. Only 15-16 technicians indicated they might work with Leena Gangopadhyay's son.
"While some projects by the production house have been affected as they have been taken off air, we are speaking to those involved and also working with other producers to help accommodate affected artistes in other projects wherever possible," Prosenjit assured, showing efforts to mitigate the impact.
Looking Ahead
As tensions simmer, Dev remains resolute, stating, "Anirban will remain in my film regardless of opposition." The industry now faces a critical juncture, balancing legal rulings, emotional responses, and the need for unity in the wake of tragedy. Prosenjit's call for patience and private resolution underscores the complex dynamics at play in Tollywood's ongoing disputes.
