Nakkul Mehta's Unconventional Path: From Unreleased Debut to Television Stardom

In a candid revelation, actor Nakkul Mehta has shared that his initial foray into the film industry did not result in a screen debut. The project, a Telugu film he began his career with, never reached audiences, transforming what should have been a professional introduction into a complete reset. This early experience taught him that an acting career can shift unpredictably, without warning.

Exclusive Interview: Reflecting on Early Pressures and Confusion

During an exclusive interview with India Today, Mehta looked back on that formative phase, discussing the pressure and confusion that accompanied his start. He explained how time has reshaped his understanding of success. Mehta traced his journey from the South Indian film industry to theater, advertising, and eventually television, describing it as unconventional yet profoundly instructive.

He reflected that his first step into cinema preceded his television work and failed to deliver the launch he had anticipated. This experience forced him to confront discomfort, isolation, and self-doubt at a very early stage in his career.

Career Beginnings: The Telugu Film That Never Released

Mehta detailed that his acting journey commenced with a Telugu project that never saw the light of day. "I started my career with a Telugu film which never came out, one of those works," he stated. At the time, he spent months in Hyderabad with little to do, watching films and observing the industry from the outside.

He recalled witnessing Shriya Saran's rise up close. "When I went to Hyderabad, Shriya Saran was the name everywhere. She had probably just started then, but she was extremely successful straight away." This contrast left a lasting impression on him.

"Then I went back to theatre, did some advertising, and found my way. She, on the other hand, has been working consistently and has been at it for 25 years. That’s the difference," Mehta added.

Challenges of a South Indian Film Project

Mehta admitted that the Telugu film was a difficult experience. "Doing a South film was very hard for me because I didn’t know the language. The circumstances in which we made that film were challenging, and I felt like I had no allies, no support." He emphasized that this was about the people involved, not the industry itself.

Redefining Success: A Personal Evolution

Looking back, Mehta revealed that acting was not a clear calling initially. "Initially, I’m not even sure why I wanted to be an actor," he said, noting that while he enjoyed entertaining people, he lacked purpose early on.

This changed over time. "After that experience, I realised I enjoyed something about the life between ‘action’ and ‘cut’." Television played a crucial role in his growth. "Somewhere along the way, I discovered the joy of getting a scene right."

Today, Mehta defines success in personal terms. "A show or film may not reach people, but what I felt that day was success for me." He elaborated, "If you can have two or three great days where you personally feel you did your best, that is success."

Inspiration and Longevity in the Industry

Mehta also spoke about the importance of continuous learning and longevity. "It’s about constantly learning," he stated, citing Shreya Saran as his inspiration. "If I can retain that spirit, then I think I would have done well, honestly."
