Lara Dutta's Harrowing Near-Drowning Experience During 'Andaaz' Shoot
Bollywood actress Lara Dutta, celebrated for her versatile performances, recently shared a terrifying incident from the early days of her career. While filming her debut movie 'Andaaz' alongside Akshay Kumar, a dance sequence shot in the sea turned perilous due to unexpectedly strong waves.
The Scary Incident That Left Her Shaken
During the shoot, Lara found herself struggling against powerful ocean currents. Wearing leather attire and unable to swim, she quickly lost her footing and sank underwater. "I went underwater, wearing leather, didn't know how to swim, sank like a rock," she recounted in an interview with Asian Television Network Canada.
Fortunately, co-star Akshay Kumar was nearby and acted swiftly to pull her to safety. The rescue came just in time, but the experience left Lara in hypothermic shock. The production team immediately halted filming and rushed her to a hospital for medical attention.
Lasting Impact and Confronting Fear
This traumatic event had profound effects on Lara's career choices and personal psychology. Years later, when Akshay Kumar suggested her for the underwater adventure film 'Blue', Lara initially declined due to her persistent fear of water. "I couldn't take it up," she confessed, explaining how the 'Andaaz' incident continued to haunt her.
However, Akshay offered simple yet transformative advice: "Learn swimming." Taking this to heart, Lara embarked on a journey of overcoming her aquaphobia.
Turning Point: Learning to Swim and Dive
At age 30, when Akshay suggested she learn diving for 'Blue', Lara initially reacted with disbelief. "Mai hi pagal mili hoon" (Do you think I am crazy?), she laughed, recalling her amused response. Yet she recognized this as an opportunity for personal growth.
Lara began swimming lessons, gradually building confidence in water. Her perseverance paid off when she successfully performed the demanding underwater scenes in 'Blue', marking a significant personal triumph and career milestone.
About 'Blue' and Recent Work
Released in 2009 and directed by Anthony D'Souza, 'Blue' featured an ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, Zayed Khan, and Lara Dutta. While the film didn't achieve commercial success at the box office, it represented a meaningful achievement for Lara in conquering her fears.
More recently, Lara appeared in the 2023 romantic drama 'Ishq-e-Nadaan', directed by Avishek Ghosh. The film explores intergenerational love stories and also stars Mohit Raina, Neena Gupta, Kanwaljit Singh, and Shriya Pilgaonkar.
Lara Dutta's journey from nearly drowning during her first film to mastering underwater scenes demonstrates remarkable resilience. Her story highlights the unpredictable dangers of filmmaking in natural environments and the power of confronting personal fears through determination and support from colleagues.
