Jewar Project Marks UP's Entry into Semiconductor Manufacturing
Uttar Pradesh is set to emerge as a major electronics and semiconductor hub with the commencement of the Jewar manufacturing project, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnav announced. The project, located in Jewar near Noida, is expected to attract significant investment and create thousands of jobs, positioning the state as a key player in India's semiconductor ecosystem.
The Jewar facility will focus on the production of semiconductors and electronic components, catering to domestic and global demand. Vaishnav highlighted that the project aligns with the government's vision of making India a self-reliant hub for electronics manufacturing under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
Investment and Employment Generation
The project is estimated to involve an investment of over ₹10,000 crore and is projected to generate direct and indirect employment for more than 20,000 people. According to Vaishnav, the initiative will also foster ancillary industries and boost local entrepreneurship. "This is a landmark step for Uttar Pradesh and India's electronics sector," the minister said during the announcement.
The facility will be developed in phases, with the first phase expected to be operational by 2026. It will include state-of-the-art fabrication units and assembly lines for advanced semiconductor chips used in smartphones, automobiles, and industrial applications.
Government Support and Policy Framework
The Uttar Pradesh government has extended full support to the project, including land allocation, tax incentives, and streamlined clearances. The central government's Semicon India program, with a outlay of ₹76,000 crore, provides financial incentives for semiconductor fabs, display fabs, and design companies. Vaishnav noted that the Jewar project is one of several initiatives under this program to reduce import dependence.
"Uttar Pradesh is becoming a preferred destination for electronics manufacturing due to its robust infrastructure and skilled workforce," Vaishnav added. The state has already attracted investments from companies like Samsung and Foxconn in related sectors.
Impact on India's Tech Ecosystem
The Jewar project is expected to strengthen India's position in the global semiconductor supply chain. Semiconductors are critical components for electronics, and India currently imports most of its requirements. The initiative will help in import substitution and enhance export potential. Industry experts believe that the project could catalyze the development of a complete electronics manufacturing ecosystem in the region.
Vaishnav emphasized that the government is committed to creating a conducive environment for high-tech manufacturing. "This project will not only boost the economy but also create opportunities for innovation and research in semiconductor technology," he said.
Future Prospects
With the Jewar project, Uttar Pradesh joins states like Gujarat and Karnataka in the race to become semiconductor hubs. The project is expected to attract further investments from global chipmakers and component suppliers. The minister expressed confidence that the initiative will propel India towards its goal of becoming a $1 trillion digital economy by 2025-26.
Local authorities are also planning to develop a dedicated electronics park near Jewar to house ancillary units. The project is seen as a win-win for the state and the nation, driving job creation and technological advancement.
