Kapil Sharma Opens Up on Missing His Father and Battling Depression at 36
Comedian Kapil Sharma, known for his infectious humor and television success, has recently shared a deeply personal side of his life, revealing the profound impact of his father's loss and a severe bout of depression he faced at the age of 36. In a heartfelt conversation with ETimes, Kapil delved into the emotional voids and struggles that have shaped his journey from Amritsar to stardom.
The Void of a Father's Absence
Kapil Sharma opened up about the enduring pain of missing his father, who passed away in 2004. He recounted poignant moments that highlight this void, such as when he won a trophy and a cheque of Rs 10 lakh, which brought him to tears as he wished his father could have been there to share the joy. Another memory he shared was standing outside his house during the premiere of his show, hearing laughter from neighboring homes, and feeling a deep sense of longing for his father's presence. "I miss him every day, but some moments hit harder," Kapil expressed, emphasizing how certain milestones amplify the absence.
Battling Depression at 36
Despite achieving significant success on television, Kapil Sharma faced a challenging phase at 36 when he slipped into depression. He described this period as emotionally draining, recalling how people began to speculate that his career was over. "At 36, depression hit me hard and I went completely down," he admitted. However, Kapil's story is one of resilience; over time, he began to rebuild his life. His marriage, the relaunch of his show, and completing over 300 episodes post-comeback marked a turning point. He now believes that uncertainty is a constant in life, and maintaining sincerity and good intentions can lead to better days.
No Biopic Plans and Focus on Meaningful Work
Addressing rumors about a biopic on his life, Kapil Sharma clarified that such a project is not currently in the works. He explained that while producers have shown interest, he feels the timing is premature, as he is still in the process of understanding life and his journey is ongoing. Additionally, Kapil shared his desire for his children to be proud of his work. He cited his role in Zwigato as an example of choosing projects with emotional or social depth, even if they aren't blockbuster hits. "Tomorrow when my kids grow up, they shouldn't feel that their father spent his entire life doing meaningless things – he also did work of substance," he stated.
Personal Life and Family
Kapil Sharma married his college sweetheart, Ginni Chatrath, in 2018. The couple welcomed their daughter, Anayra, in December 2019, and their son, Trishaan, in February 2021. His family has been a cornerstone in his recovery and ongoing journey, providing support as he navigates the highs and lows of life and career.
