Resul Pookutty, the Chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, has stated that his physical absence did not hinder the success of the recent International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). He maintained that he was connected to all festival proceedings through virtual means. Pookutty also informed that the Kerala government was aware well in advance of his official commitments in London, which required his presence.
Navigating Visa Denials and Criticism
Addressing the media in Thiruvananthapuram, the Oscar-winning sound designer acknowledged facing significant criticism for not being physically present at the festival venue. He attributed his absence to prior official work in London. Pookutty also touched upon a sensitive issue, revealing that the Central government had denied visas to several foreign filmmakers due to matters connected to India's foreign policy.
Despite not being on the ground, Pookutty emphasized that he was actively involved in all crucial decision-making processes for the IFFK. He stressed that his remote participation ensured the festival's smooth operation.
Last-Minute Chaos and Film Clearances
The Academy Chairman shed light on the behind-the-scenes confusion regarding film screenings. He disclosed that numerous movies, which had reportedly received verbal approval, were missing from the final list. Initially, permission was denied to approximately 187 films.
Pookutty claimed he intervened personally to resolve the crisis, managing to secure clearance for the majority of these films at the eleventh hour. He pointed a finger at bureaucratic delays within the system for creating the last-minute scramble and confusion.
Six Films Dropped Following Political Stand
Pookutty explained that a decisive political stance taken by the Kerala government helped clear the logjam for most films. However, this intervention could not help six specific titles. These six films were ultimately not screened at the IFFK as their content was linked to issues concerning India's foreign policy, a matter where the festival organizers had to comply with the central directive.
The six banned films are:
- 'All That’s Left of You'
- 'Clash'
- 'Yes'
- 'Flames'
- 'Eagles of the Republic'
- 'A Poet'
Pookutty stated the organizers had no alternative but to accept this decision.
Filmmaker Dr Biju Launches Scathing Attack
Meanwhile, acclaimed filmmaker Dr Biju launched a fierce critique of the festival's management. Taking to Facebook, Dr Biju lambasted the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy and the state government over the controversies plaguing this year's IFFK.
He questioned how such a disorganized situation was permitted to unfold at a major international event. In his post, Dr Biju referred to the Academy Chairman as a "dummy" and highlighted the notable absence of both Pookutty and the artistic director from the festival venue. He underscored that this marked the first time in the IFFK's 30-year history that the event was conducted without its top two officials being physically present.
