Chris Hemsworth's Brief Amazon 'Chief Heartthrob' Role Sparks Controversy
Actor Chris Hemsworth, best known for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, made a surprising appearance on Amazon's internal organizational chart on Thursday morning. According to a Reuters report, Hemsworth was listed as "Chief Heartthrob" for Alexa Devices, the e-commerce giant's voice assistant division, and was shown reporting directly to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy.
Promotional Stunt for Super Bowl Advertisement
This unusual corporate placement was part of a carefully orchestrated promotional campaign designed to generate buzz for Amazon's Super Bowl commercial. The advertisement, which showcases Alexa's advanced AI capabilities, features Hemsworth in a humorous scenario where he imagines his own demise caused by Alexa AI mishaps. In the commercial, the actor faces various exaggerated dangers, including being crushed by a garage door, drowning in a pool, and wrestling a bear unleashed by the voice assistant.
The promotional nature of the stunt was confirmed by Hemsworth's playful statement on the internal chart: "When I’m not starring in movies, I enjoy spending time with my family, campaigning for Ad Meter votes, snake wrangling, bear wrestling, hammer throwing and a nice cinnamon scrub."
Amazon also provided Hemsworth with an official company email address and assigned him the role of "bar raiser," a prestigious internal position typically reserved for employees involved in hiring decisions across the organization. However, by late Thursday, the actor's corporate status had been downgraded, with his reporting line shifted to the head of devices and services instead of the CEO.
Employee Backlash Amid Corporate Layoffs
While intended as lighthearted promotion, Amazon's stunt drew sharp criticism from employees who found the timing insensitive. The company recently implemented significant workforce reductions, laying off approximately 16,000 corporate employees last week, many of whom worked specifically on Alexa-related projects. Additionally, Amazon's stock price experienced a decline following disappointing fourth-quarter earnings results announced on Thursday.
The Washington Post, which is owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, also initiated substantial layoffs this week, cutting approximately one-third of its staff. Against this backdrop of corporate restructuring and job losses, many Amazon employees viewed the Hemsworth promotion as tone-deaf.
One employee expressed frustration on an internal social media platform: "This definitely makes up for the hollow feeling of cleaning out my peer’s desk and meeting him out front with his boxes, given he was laid off last week."
Another staff member commented: "It’s less of a joke than it is an insult to the rest of us." When approached for comment about employee concerns, an Amazon spokesperson described the Hemsworth listing as "a fun internal Easter egg as we head into the Big Game this weekend" but declined to address the specific criticisms raised by staff members.
Super Bowl Advertising Context and AI Competition
The Super Bowl represents one of the most expensive advertising platforms globally, with companies paying approximately $8 million for just thirty seconds of broadcast time during this year's championship game. Amazon's substantial investment in their Super Bowl commercial reflects the intense competition in the artificial intelligence sector, where rivals including Anthropic and OpenAI are also running advertisements during the same event.
This promotional push coincides with Amazon's announcement that its newly enhanced Alexa service, powered by generative AI technology, will become available to all Prime members. The voice assistant, which can answer questions, facilitate purchases, and control certain home automation systems through voice commands, has reportedly operated at a financial loss since its introduction over a decade ago.
Amazon is now making significant investments in an AI-powered upgrade for Alexa, with the Super Bowl advertisement serving as a high-profile showcase for these technological advancements. The company hopes this strategic move will transform Alexa from a loss-making product into a profitable and competitive offering in the rapidly evolving AI marketplace.
