Harsha Vardhan Opens Up About His Unplanned Journey in Music and Acting
"From where I started to where I am going, everything has been unplanned and a surprise," reveals Harsha Vardhan in an exclusive and candid conversation. The talented singer and musician, who is the son of renowned composer Vidyasagar, delves into his efforts to carve out a distinct identity, his recent foray into acting, the release of his indie song, and whether he seeks career advice from his father.
Learning from Legends: Musical Influences and Industry Insights
"I listen to a lot of '90s and 2000s music," Harsha shares. "Beyond the mainstream commercial hits, my father has created numerous underrated gems. Musically, there is so much to learn from them." He highlights the song "Megam Vandhu Pogum" from the 2010 film Mandhira Punnagai as a prime example—a Carnatic composition fused with Western arrangements that is both tricky and extremely challenging to sing. Harsha has been meticulously dissecting this track to enhance his own skills.
As a programmer, Harsha has collaborated with several esteemed composers, including AR Rahman, GV Prakash, Thaman, and his father Vidyasagar. From these experiences, he gained invaluable musical knowledge and insights into crafting background scores for cinematic scenes. "Each composer has their own unique style and method for extracting the best work from musicians," he notes. Currently, he is integrating these lessons into his personal music projects, refining his craft with the wisdom acquired from these industry stalwarts.
Embracing Artistic Freedom: The Rise of Indie Music
Harsha observes a significant shift in the entertainment landscape, where artists are now building identities beyond traditional cinema. "Every artist is developing their own style and persona," he says. While film music often comes with narrative constraints and restrictions, indie music offers unparalleled creative liberty. "In cinema, you work within the confines of a story, but in indie, you can freely express your true feelings without any limitations."
His career trajectory reflects this evolution: starting as a programmer for composers, he unexpectedly found himself performing on stage, and now he is releasing independent songs. "I'm getting into acting next," Harsha announces. "I just want to give my best in every opportunity that comes my way. My goal is to keep learning, growing, and entertaining people."
Balancing Passions: Acting Ambitions with a Musical Core
Acting in films was never part of Harsha's original plan; it emerged organically from his stage performances. "I used to post many cover songs on Instagram, which helped people notice my on-camera presence," he explains. This visibility eventually led to acting offers, and he has committed to a couple of films, awaiting their official announcements.
Despite his interest in acting, Harsha emphasizes that music will always remain his main priority. "Since I never considered acting as a primary focus, I haven't looked to any particular actor as a role model," he admits. However, he admires performers like Dhanush, Vijay, and Vikram for their distinctive styles and versatility.
Future Projects: Light-Hearted Romance and Multilingual Aspirations
Harsha expresses a desire to work on light-hearted romantic films, both as an actor and a composer. "I'm in talks for a few projects as a composer, but I haven't committed to anything yet," he reveals. He believes there is a current vacuum in the industry for such genres, as many contemporary films lean towards raw, rustic, or action-heavy themes. "I feel I can fit into that romantic space," he asserts, though he remains open to exploring diverse roles as his career progresses.
While he is willing to work in multiple languages given the opportunity, Harsha plans to start by focusing on Tamil cinema. "Since I'm just beginning, I'd like to explore more of our language, Tamil, and then gradually branch out in the future," he states.
Projecting as an All-Rounder: A Vision for Complete Artistry
Harsha aims to establish himself as a multifaceted artist. "I started as a musician and have always been passionate about dancing and performing," he says. "I'm very comfortable in front of the camera and know exactly how I want to project myself—as an all-rounder." He envisions a complete artist as someone capable of excelling in singing, dancing, acting, and performing, drawing inspiration from global trends.
"In the Korean pop music scene, artists are trained from childhood to sing and dance, while in Hollywood, many are versatile performers," Harsha notes. He is pleased to see this culture slowly gaining traction in India and takes pride in his ability to handle various aspects of entertainment independently. "I'm happy that I can pull off everything on my own," he concludes, embodying his commitment to continuous growth and artistic expression.
