Fatwa Issued Against Nora Fatehi Over Controversial Song 'Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke'
The Muslim Personal Darul Ifta in Aligarh has issued a religious edict, or fatwa, against actor and performer Nora Fatehi concerning the controversial track 'Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke'. This song, which also features Bollywood icon Sanjay Dutt, is part of the upcoming Kannada period action film KD: The Devil. The fatwa was announced after the song faced significant backlash online due to its lyrics and visual content, which the religious body deemed objectionable and not aligned with Islamic teachings.
Government Confirms Ban in Parliament Amid Growing Controversy
Amid escalating public outcry, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed in the Lok Sabha that the song has been officially banned. This confirmation came in response to a question raised by Samajwadi Party MP Anand Bhadouria, highlighting the widespread criticism the track has received. The controversy intensified just days before reaching Parliament, with several organizations demanding action against those associated with the song.
Critics have alleged that the song features "vulgar" lyrics and visuals that objectify women, sparking a larger debate across social media platforms. Complaints were filed seeking the registration of an FIR and the removal of the track from circulation, further fueling the dispute.
Nora Fatehi's Response: Reliance on Team's Explanation
Addressing the issue, Nora Fatehi shared a detailed video on Instagram, distancing herself from the Hindi version of the song. She explained that she agreed to participate three years ago because it was part of a major film project featuring Sanjay Dutt, whom she described as an icon. Fatehi stated that she believed the song was a remake of the iconic track 'Nayak Nahi Khalnayak Hoon Main' and that nothing seemed inappropriate or vulgar when the makers explained its meaning to her at the time.
However, she clarified a crucial point: she does not understand Kannada and had relied entirely on the team's explanation. This admission has added another layer to the controversy, raising questions about accountability and cultural sensitivity in film production.
Film Details and Cast
Directed by Prem, KD: The Devil is a period action entertainer inspired by real events from 1970s Bangalore. The film stars Dhruva Sarja in the lead role, alongside a notable ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Ramesh Aravind, Reeshma Nanaiah, and V Ravichandran. It is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 30 this year, though the current controversy may impact its reception.
The incident underscores the ongoing tensions between artistic expression and religious sentiments in India's diverse cultural landscape. As debates continue online and in official circles, the fate of the song and its associated film remains uncertain, with potential implications for future content in the entertainment industry.
