ED Attaches Actor Jayasurya's Assets in Rs 39 Lakh Money Laundering Case
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), Kochi zonal office, has provisionally attached assets valued at Rs 39.01 lakh, including immovable property connected to Malayalam actor Jayasurya. This action is part of a money laundering investigation targeting Swadiq Rahim, the managing director of Save Box Concepts Pvt Ltd, in an alleged investor fraud scheme.
Legal Basis and Investigation Details
The property attachment was executed under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. According to ED sources, Jayasurya received payments from Rahim to serve as a brand ambassador for the investment scheme promoted by Save Box Concepts.
The ED's probe was initiated based on four First Information Reports (FIRs) registered by the Thrissur city East police station against Rahim and other individuals. These FIRs were filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, related to cheating and fraud.
Alleged Fraud Scheme and Investor Losses
According to the ED, Rahim allegedly deceived multiple investors by enticing them to invest in Save Box Concepts with promises of lucrative returns. The company projected itself as India's first bidding application and later expanded into cryptocurrency trading. Investors were offered company shares, partnerships, or franchises linked to an online bidding application and related ventures.
However, the company failed to honor its commitments to investors. Operations reportedly ceased by late 2022, following numerous criminal complaints from aggrieved investors.
Proceeds of Crime and Diversion
The investigation revealed that proceeds of crime amounting to approximately Rs 39.01 lakh were generated through cheating. This amount relates specifically to four complainants after partial refunds were made. The ED stated that these illicit funds were subsequently layered or diverted for various purposes, including:
- Celebrity brand endorsements, such as payments to actor Jayasurya
- Cryptocurrency trading losses
- Personal expenses of the accused
- Other utilizations related to the fraudulent scheme
Ongoing Investigation
The Enforcement Directorate has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. Further details may emerge as the probe continues into the full extent of the alleged money laundering activities and the involvement of other parties.
This case highlights the increasing scrutiny of celebrity endorsements in financial schemes and the ED's efforts to trace and attach assets derived from alleged criminal activities.
