Director Abhishek Chaubey, in a recent candid conversation, has opened up about his decision to cast the late Sushant Singh Rajput in his critically acclaimed 2019 film, Sonchiriya. He revealed that Sushant's inherent 'desi' vibe made him a more fitting choice than many of his contemporaries from Mumbai's Bandra area.
The 'Desi' Factor: Why Sushant Was the Perfect Lakhna
Chaubey explained that the casting decision was straightforward. The filmmaking team felt Sushant Singh Rajput possessed a certain rooted, Indian authenticity that was crucial for the role of Lakhna Singh, a conflicted dacoit in the Chambal valley. 'Sonchiriya', while a period action film on the surface, was a deep exploration of dharma and redemption, requiring an actor who could embody a raw, earthy character.
'The reason was very simple,' Chaubey stated. 'We discussed his name and agreed there was something desi about Sushant. With the other stars, these Bandra boys, it's not that they can't do it, but it's a longer journey from who they are to that world. For Sushant, it would be easier. He comes from a small town and has some idea of the kind of world we're talking about.'
An Instant Yes and Cherished Memories from the Set
The director also fondly recalled how swiftly Sushant came on board for the project, which is now considered a career-best performance for the actor. 'Luckily for us, he said yes instantaneously,' Chaubey shared. He met Sushant at 4 PM during a shoot, and by the same time the next day, the actor was in their office giving his official confirmation.
Beyond his professional commitment, Chaubey remembered Sushant's profound intellectual curiosity, particularly his passion for astronomy. He recounted a remarkable incident where Sushant had a large professional telescope transported from Mumbai to their remote shoot location in the Chambal region.
'A couple of young scientists came to the set to install it,' Chaubey said. 'After the shoot packed up, you'd see him lying on the lawn, eyes glued, looking at planets. One day, everybody went and did that with him.' This shared moment of cosmic wonder became a cherished memory for the entire team.
From Box Office Disaster to Cult Classic
Despite being hailed as a masterpiece and featuring what many believe was Sushant Singh Rajput's most understated and powerful performance, Sonchiriya was a commercial disaster upon its release in 2019. However, its fate changed over time, especially after Sushant's tragic passing in June 2020.
The film has since been rediscovered by audiences and critics alike, achieving a significant cult status. It is now celebrated as a hidden gem of Indian cinema, with Sushant's portrayal of Lakhna being re-evaluated as one of his finest works. Chaubey's reflections offer a poignant look at the actor's unique talent and the authentic quality that set him apart in the industry.
