Bhagyashree Opens Up About Family Resistance and Salman Khan's Support at Her Wedding
Veteran actor Bhagyashree recently shared a heartfelt account of the challenges she faced during her marriage to husband Himalaya Dassani in 1989. The Maine Pyaar Kiya star, who became a national crush after her debut opposite Salman Khan, chose to leave the film industry to marry her school-time boyfriend, but her decision was met with strong opposition from her parents.
Parents' Resistance and Emotional Turmoil
In a candid interview, Bhagyashree revealed that her parents were against the marriage, citing her young age and lack of life experience. She agreed to their conditions for a year, even promising to marry someone of their choice, but the situation escalated when her parents burnt letters from Himalaya in a bonfire. "That bonfire of letters burnt many hearts and wishes," she recalled, describing it as a deeply saddening moment that left her in tears.
A Wedding Without Family Blessings
Despite her efforts, Bhagyashree's parents refused to attend her wedding. She left home without their blessings, touching their feet before departing to marry Himalaya in a temple ceremony. "I didn't let my mehndi fade away for a year," she said, holding onto hope that her parents might eventually come around, but they did not. Even after the marriage, when she visited to seek their approval, they refused to open the door, and it took years, including the birth of their son Abhimanyu, for them to partially reconcile.
Salman Khan and Sooraj Barjatya's Supportive Role
During this difficult period, Bhagyashree found solace in her Maine Pyaar Kiya team. Salman Khan and director Sooraj Barjatya attended her small reception and offered unwavering support. "Salman was so protective and serious," she noted, adding that he asked if she needed help and was the last to leave the wedding. Sooraj Barjatya even offered to mediate with her parents, showcasing their kindness during her time of need.
Bhagyashree's Life After Marriage
Bhagyashree married Himalaya Dassani in 1989, and they have two children, Abhimanyu and Avantika, both of whom are actors. After quitting films post-marriage, she has made a comeback in recent years and is set to appear in Raja Shivaji, directed by Riteish Deshmukh. Her story highlights the personal sacrifices and emotional resilience involved in balancing family expectations with personal happiness in the Bollywood industry.
