FIFA 2026: Mexico President Urges Responsible Celebrations

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday called for responsible celebrations ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match between Mexico and England, urging fans to avoid alcohol abuse and overcrowded public spaces. The appeal follows the deaths of at least four people during celebrations after Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the previous round.

Deadly Celebrations Prompt Warning

According to Reuters, an estimated one million fans gathered near Mexico City's Paseo de la Reforma to celebrate Mexico's knockout-stage win. Three victims — a 44-year-old man and two women aged 19 and 48 — died from suffocation after being crushed in the massive crowd. The fourth fatality remains under investigation.

"We must avoid alcohol abuse, because whenever there is excessive drinking at these kinds of celebrations, problems can arise, including more violence linked to alcohol," Sheinbaum said at her regular morning press conference, as reported by Reuters. She also urged supporters to avoid overcrowded areas, emphasizing that both fans and authorities share the responsibility of ensuring safe and orderly festivities.

Mexico's Historic Knockout Win

Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the Round of 32 marked their first FIFA World Cup knockout-stage win since 1986. It ended an eight-match streak of eliminations in knockout fixtures, the longest such run in World Cup history. The team had earlier topped their group with wins against South Africa (2-0), South Korea (1-0), and Czechia (3-0).

England's Path to the Round of 16

England advanced after a 2-1 comeback win over Congo DR in the Round of 32, with captain Harry Kane scoring twice. In the group stage, they defeated Croatia 4-2, drew 0-0 with Ghana, and beat Panama 2-0. The Round of 16 clash against co-hosts Mexico is scheduled for July 5 local time.

Government and Public Responsibility

Sheinbaum stressed the need for collective responsibility, stating that authorities will deploy additional security measures to prevent a repeat of the tragic incidents. She also advised fans to watch the match in smaller groups or at home to minimize risks. The Mexican government has not announced any ban on public gatherings but strongly discourages large crowds.
