AP Dhillon's Remarkable Journey from Homelessness to Stardom
Canadian singer and rapper AP Dhillon, who recently graced The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 4, has opened up about his extraordinary journey from sleeping on the streets of Canada to amassing a reported net worth of Rs 83 crore. The 33-year-old artist, now celebrated for hits like "Brown Munde" and "Excuses," shared poignant details of his early struggles during the popular talk show episode.
Sleeping on Streets Without a Credit Card
When host Kapil Sharma inquired about the toughest moment Dhillon faced in Canada, the singer recounted his harrowing arrival. "The toughest moment for me was when I first landed in Canada. I had no place to stay," Dhillon revealed. Despite receiving some money from his father, he emphasized, "I was never born with a silver spoon."
Without a credit card—a concept unfamiliar to him at the time—Dhillon attempted to book a hotel room with cash but was refused. "I stepped outside and slept in front of the hotel. I had severe jet lag," he shared, adding that his flight agent had booked a journey with five stopovers, compounding his exhaustion.
Rescue by a Compassionate Indian Couple
After spending a second night on the streets, Dhillon's fortune changed when an Indian woman approached him. "She said I didn't look homeless and asked, 'Why are you sleeping outside?'" he recalled. Upon explaining his credit card predicament, she enlisted her boyfriend's help.
"He came to me and said, 'Brother please don't steal or break anything, or they'll charge me.' I said, 'No chance, bro,'" Dhillon recounted, noting the couple hailed from Calgary. Their act of kindness provided him with temporary shelter, marking a turning point in his early days abroad.
Grueling Work Ethic and Financial Struggles
As Dhillon enrolled in college, he took on multiple jobs to sustain himself. "I have worked at gas stations, convenience stores, and my last job was at Best Buy," he disclosed. Balancing work and studies, he often labored for 10 to 12 hours before attending classes, managing all expenses—rent, food, and more—independently.
Through perseverance, he eventually secured a credit card and improved his living situation. Dhillon's relentless work ethic laid the foundation for his future success, demonstrating his unwavering determination.
Creating a Music Studio in a Garage
Driven by his passion for music, Dhillon transformed a small garage in his rented apartment into a makeshift studio. "I saved some money, went to Home Depot, and made a 10-by-6 room with plywood and added a door," he explained. Gradually acquiring equipment, he honed his craft in this humble space, refusing to give up on his artistic aspirations.
This DIY studio became the birthplace of his now-famous tracks, including "Goat," "Dil Nu," "Afsos," "With You," and "Insane," which have garnered millions of views on YouTube and catapulted him to fame.
Reflections on Success and Industry Challenges
Dhillon's appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show also touched on broader industry topics. He has previously addressed why he hasn't ventured into Bollywood, citing business practices that need change. His journey underscores the resilience required to overcome adversity, from financial hardships to creative barriers.
Today, AP Dhillon stands as a testament to hard work and perseverance, inspiring fans worldwide with his story of rising from the streets to stardom, all while maintaining a down-to-earth perspective on his remarkable achievements.
