Anupam Kher's 'Tanvi the Great' Makes Global OTT Debut, Actor Announces New Varanasi Project

Veteran actor and director Anupam Kher marked a significant milestone in his illustrious career as his film 'Tanvi the Great' premiered worldwide on OTT streaming platforms today, Tuesday, March 3, 2026. This digital release opens the film to a vast new audience, transitioning from its earlier theatrical and film festival runs.

New Introspective Film Set in Varanasi

In a parallel development, Kher revealed he is currently working on a new, deeply personal project set against the historic backdrop of Varanasi. Describing it as a spiritual successor to his National Award-winning performance in Mahesh Bhatt's 'Saaransh', Kher told Variety, "I was discussing with Mahesh Bhatt… it's a 'Saaransh 2', basically."

The upcoming film explores profound themes of identity, ageing, and self-discovery through the inner journey of an elderly man who challenges societal perceptions about growing old. Kher emphasized the project's emotional depth, stating, "This time, the man is not passive in the sense that he was aggressive in his thoughts. This time I just feel that I need to reinvent myself."

Full Circle Moment: From 'Saaransh' to Present

Kher's career has come full circle in a remarkable way. Decades ago, at just 28 years old, he portrayed a grieving 65-year-old father in 'Saaransh', earning critical acclaim. Now, as he approaches his 71st birthday on March 7, he reflects on this striking role reversal.

"When I was 28, I played a 65-year-old man's role. Now at that time, I portrayed 65 as what I thought 65 would be like, but I’m going to be 71 on March 7, and I feel like a 28-year-old man," Kher shared. He described the new project as "a funny thriller, but it's a human story" that focuses on positive, heartfelt narratives with happy endings.

'Tanvi the Great' Finds New Life on OTT

Meanwhile, 'Tanvi the Great' begins its digital journey on Prime Video, reaching viewers beyond its initial theatrical release on July 18, 2025. The film, directed by and starring Anupam Kher, features an ensemble cast including Jackie Shroff, Iain Glen, Boman Irani, and debutante Shubhangi Dutt.

The story follows Tanvi Raina, an autistic woman on an emotional mission to honor her late father by saluting the Indian flag at the Siachen Glacier. Despite boasting an impressive technical team with Oscar-winning composer M. M. Keeravani and Japanese cinematographer Keiko Nakahara, the film faced tough box office competition upon release, particularly from Mohit Suri's blockbuster 'Saiyaara'.

This dual announcement highlights Anupam Kher's continued evolution as both a storyteller and performer, bridging his past achievements with ambitious new creative endeavors that promise to resonate with audiences seeking meaningful cinema.
