Fans of Bollywood couple Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai were taken down memory lane as old photos from their wedding day resurfaced on social media. The images, showing the pair in their regal wedding attire, went viral after eagle-eyed netizens drew comparisons between the actor's accessories and a striking jewellery piece from the Nizam of Hyderabad's crown jewels, spotted at the Met Gala 2026.
Renewed Fascination with the Nizam's Jewels
The pearl, diamond, and emerald piece gained renewed attention when users noticed that Bachchan wore a strikingly similar kalgi on his turban during his 2007 wedding ceremonies with Aishwarya. The archival photos from the lavish Mumbai wedding have now joined the online debate about the famed jewels of the Nizam.
Abhishek's Royal Wedding Look
While there has been no official confirmation regarding the jewellery piece, designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, who styled the wedding, famously spoke about turning the event into a royal affair. They highlighted the intricacy of the groom's attire. Abu recalled, "He had some of the best jewellery that there was. He wore phenomenal pieces, which Abu and I sourced. It was the first time someone wore a Mughal tumbler bead necklace. There were ruby buttons on Abhishek's sherwani."
The groom dazzled in diamonds, rubies, pearls, and other precious stones, while the bride adorned herself in gold. Aishwarya opted for a traditional gold-woven Kanjeevaram saree, accessorized with heavy gold jewellery.
Patiala Necklace Controversy at Met Gala 2025
While the Nizam's headpiece made waves at the 2026 Met Gala, the previous year saw another controversy. Punjabi star Diljit Dosanjh was reportedly denied permission to wear the iconic 1928 Cartier Patiala Necklace for the 2025 Met Gala because it was on long-term loan to the Victoria & Albert (V&A) Museum in London and unavailable for loan, as per The New York Times. Netizens expressed outrage that Diljit was denied the piece, while Emma Chamberlain had worn parts of it during her 2022 Met appearance.
Nevertheless, Diljit wore a custom outfit and a replica necklace from Golecha Jewels to honor his roots.
