Bengaluru is grappling with a severe liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shortage that threatens to stall operations for more than 400 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the city. The crisis has escalated over the past week, with many businesses reporting insufficient supplies to maintain production schedules.
Impact on Local Businesses
The affected MSMEs, ranging from food processing units to engineering workshops, rely heavily on LPG for their daily operations. According to industry associations, the shortage could lead to significant production losses and potential layoffs if not addressed urgently. Many units have already reduced shifts or temporarily halted operations due to the lack of fuel.
Reasons Behind the Shortage
Industry sources attribute the crunch to a combination of factors, including delayed deliveries from suppliers, increased demand during the winter season, and logistical bottlenecks. The Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association (KASSIA) has urged the state government to intervene and ensure priority allocation of LPG cylinders to MSMEs.
"We are facing a critical situation where our members are unable to get even a single cylinder for days. This is crippling our production capacity," said a KASSIA spokesperson.
Government Response
The Karnataka government has acknowledged the issue and is in talks with oil marketing companies to streamline supplies. Officials have assured that steps are being taken to augment LPG availability in the region. However, MSME owners remain skeptical, demanding immediate action to prevent a full-blown crisis.
"We need an emergency meeting with distributors and government representatives to find a lasting solution," added the spokesperson.
The LPG crunch comes at a time when Bengaluru's MSME sector is already struggling with rising input costs and market uncertainties. A prolonged shortage could have a cascading effect on the local economy, affecting jobs and livelihoods.
