In a heartwarming recognition of dedicated service, S Seetha, the principal of Arivalayam, a special school and rehabilitation centre in Trichy, has been honoured with the Tamil Nadu state government's prestigious Best Teacher Award. The award was presented by Chief Minister M K Stalin at a government event held in Chennai on Wednesday. The honour includes a gold medal and a certificate.
An Inspiring Journey from Office Assistant to Principal
S Seetha's story is one of remarkable perseverance and passion. A first-generation graduate, she began her association with Arivalayam, which is run by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) Trichy, back in 1995 as an office assistant. Driven by a commitment to serve children with disabilities, she pursued further education, completing her special BEd in 2006 to formally become a special educator.
Her skillset is as diverse as it is impressive. Seetha is trained in multiple vocational trades including screen printing, furniture caning, jute bag making, weaving, and handicrafts. She effectively channeled this expertise to lead vocational training programmes at the school, significantly enhancing the employability and self-reliance of children with special needs.
Leadership and Resilience Through Challenges
Recognising her dedication and impact, Seetha was promoted to the position of vice-principal in 2014. She eventually assumed charge as the principal of Arivalayam in 2023. Her leadership was particularly tested during the Covid-19 pandemic. Facing significant funding challenges, Seetha spearheaded diversification initiatives that were crucial for sustaining the institution's operations and mission during those difficult times.
Arivalayam: A Beacon of Hope Since 1977
The institution Seetha leads has a long and noble history. Established in 1977, Arivalayam has been a cornerstone for providing education and skill-based vocational training to children with disabilities in the Trichy region. Its core mission is to facilitate the integration of these children into the mainstream of society. The school receives vital support through financial assistance and consistent monthly contributions from the employees of BHEL, Trichy.
The state award for S Seetha is not just a personal achievement but a celebration of the silent, transformative work done by educators in the field of special needs. It highlights the profound difference that sustained effort and vocational training can make in the lives of children with disabilities, empowering them towards a future of dignity and independence.
