The news was confirmed by his family and reported by the Press Trust of India.

A Life Dedicated to Sculpting: From Humble Beginnings to National Acclaim

Ram Sutar breathed his last in the early hours of 17th December, as confirmed by his son, Anil Sutar. In a note shared with the press, Anil Sutar expressed profound grief over his father's passing, stating he died at their Noida home. The centenarian artist had been battling age-related illnesses.

Born on 19 February 1925 in Gondur village, Dhule district, in present-day Maharashtra, Sutar's journey was one of extraordinary ascent from modest roots. His passion for sculpting was ignited in childhood and honed into excellence at the prestigious JJ School of Art and Architecture in Mumbai, where he graduated as a gold medallist.

An Immortal Legacy in Bronze and Stone

Ram Sutar's chisel gave form to some of India's most iconic and revered figures, creating public art that became part of the national consciousness. His prolific career is marked by monumental works installed across the country.

His most famous creation is undoubtedly the 182-meter tall Statue of Unity in Gujarat, a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. This engineering and artistic marvel holds the record as the world's tallest statue.

Beyond this, his genius is permanently displayed on the premises of the Indian Parliament. Two of his masterpieces there include:

  • A serene, meditative statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • A dynamic, equestrian statue of the legendary warrior-king, Chhatrapati Shivaji.
