Renowned Artist & Teacher Syed Asif Ali Passes Away at 54

The art community in Mangaluru and Karnataka is in mourning following the sudden demise of renowned artist and beloved teacher, Syed Asif Ali. The 54-year-old veteran passed away on Monday after suffering a cardiac arrest while on duty at Mahalasa College of Visual Art in Alake.

A Sudden Demise and a Lasting Legacy

Syed Asif Ali was actively engaged in his work at the college when he was struck by the fatal heart attack. He is survived by his son and daughter. Born on February 8, 1972, in Molakalmuru village, Chitradurga district, Ali dedicated his life to the visual arts. His academic journey included a General Diploma in Fine Art from Ravindra Kalaniketana, Tumakuru, in 1995, and a Master of Visual Art (MVA) from Kannada University, Hampi, in 2008.

A Three-Decade Career of Excellence and Mentorship

Ali's professional association with Mahalasa College of Visual Art began in 1996, and he was serving as the Head of the Department of Applied Art at the time of his passing. Over his illustrious 30-year career, he became widely celebrated for his vibrant, on-the-spot watercolour landscapes, a style that earned him distinct recognition.

Beyond his canvas, Ali was revered as a dedicated mentor. He provided personal guidance to countless students, who held him in high esteem. His commitment extended to training pupils at numerous art camps across the region.

Accolades and Final Homage

Syed Asif Ali's talent was validated through extensive participation in exhibitions and several prestigious awards. His notable achievements include:

  • Participation in the Mysuru Dasara exhibition on ten occasions.
  • Showcasing work at Karnataka Lalithakala Academy exhibitions five times.
  • Receiving the Karnataka Lalithakala Academy State Award.
  • Winning the Camlin National Award.
  • Being honoured with nine Mysuru Dasara awards.

Following his death, his mortal remains were kept for public homage at Mahalasa College of Visual Art and the Kodialguthu Centre for Art and Culture on Monday evening. His final journey concluded as he was taken to his native Molakalmuru for burial. Prominent cultural bodies like the Mangaluru chapter of INTACH and the Art Kanara Trust have expressed profound sorrow at the loss of a towering figure in Karnataka's art scene.
