Australia's Leading University UNSW to Launch Bengaluru Campus This August

Australia's top-ranked University of New South Wales will open its Bengaluru campus at Manyata Tech Park in August this year. The university will bring its acclaimed curriculum directly to Indian students, marking a significant expansion of international education in Karnataka's capital.

Direct Oversight from UNSW Academic Council

Karnataka Minister M B Patil confirmed that UNSW's academic council will directly supervise the Bengaluru campus operations. This ensures students receive the same quality education as their Australian counterparts while gaining valuable industry exposure at Manyata Tech Park.

"The academic council of UNSW will directly oversee the Bengaluru campus," stated Minister Patil after meeting with university representatives. "This guarantees students benefit from strong industry connections and skill-focused learning."

Official MoU Exchange at Vidhana Soudha

Professor Attila Brungs, UNSW Vice-Chancellor, and S Selvakumar, Principal Secretary of Karnataka's Industries Department, formally exchanged a memorandum of understanding on Monday. The ceremony took place at Vidhana Soudha with several key officials in attendance.

Large and Medium Industries Minister M B Patil and Higher Education Minister Dr M C Sudhakar witnessed the signing. This formal agreement paves the way for UNSW's entry into Bengaluru's educational landscape.

Initial Academic Programs Announced

The Bengaluru campus will launch with several undergraduate and postgraduate programs:

  • Undergraduate programs in commerce
  • Undergraduate programs in media studies
  • Undergraduate programs in computer science
  • Undergraduate programs in data science
  • Postgraduate program in cyber security

These programs mirror what UNSW offers at its Australian campuses, maintaining academic consistency across locations.

Strategic Location at Manyata Tech Park

Choosing Manyata Tech Park as the campus location provides students with immediate access to numerous technology companies and corporations. This proximity creates natural opportunities for internships, industry projects, and employment connections.

"With several leading companies located at Manyata Tech Park, students will benefit from strong industry exposure," explained Minister Patil. The campus will eventually expand to KWIN City in the near future as part of UNSW's long-term plans for Bengaluru.

Strengthening Bengaluru's Innovation Ecosystem

Higher Education Minister Dr M C Sudhakar highlighted how UNSW's arrival will enhance Bengaluru's position as an education and innovation hub. "UNSW is widely recognized across the Asia-Pacific region for its strong employability outcomes," he noted.

Sudhakar emphasized that UNSW graduates are actively sought by leading employers worldwide. The Bengaluru campus will further strengthen the city's innovation ecosystem and encourage more international universities to establish a presence here.

Existing Academic Partnerships

UNSW already maintains close academic and institutional relationships with several Indian organizations:

  1. Indian Institute of Management Bengaluru (IIM-B)
  2. Indian Institute of Science (IISc)
  3. National Law University
  4. Union Ministries of Highways and Steel
  5. State Renewable Energy Development Corporation

These existing connections will facilitate smoother integration of the Bengaluru campus into India's educational framework. The university operates under the current India-Australia education and research cooperation program for 2025-30.

Growing Australian Presence in Bengaluru

UNSW joins a growing list of Australian universities establishing campuses in Bengaluru. La Trobe University recently received approval for its Bengaluru operations, while Western Sydney University has confirmed plans to open a campus focusing on agricultural studies.

This trend reflects increasing educational collaboration between India and Australia, with Bengaluru emerging as a preferred destination for international universities seeking to expand their Asian footprint.
