SASTRA University Marks 26 Years of Pongal Support with Major Distribution Drive

SASTRA Deemed University has once again demonstrated its commitment to rural communities by extending its annual Pongal support initiative. This year, the university distributed gift hampers valued at a substantial Rs 30 lakh to more than 6,500 families. The effort reached ten villages across three districts in Tamil Nadu, specifically Thanjavur, Trichy, and Mayiladuthurai.

A Longstanding Tradition of Giving

This distribution marks an impressive milestone. It represents the 26th consecutive year that SASTRA University has organized such charitable programmes. The consistency of this effort highlights the institution's deep-rooted dedication to social welfare and community engagement.

University Chancellor R Sethuraman personally directed the distribution activities. His leadership ensured the smooth execution of this large-scale humanitarian project.

Contents of the Gift Hampers

Each hamper contained essential food items carefully selected to support families during the Pongal festival. Recipients received 5 kilograms of rice, 1 kilogram of dhal, and 1 kilogram of jaggery. These staples provide both nutritional value and cultural significance for the festive season.

Villages Benefiting from the Initiative

The university's outreach covered multiple villages, bringing support directly to those in need. In Thanjavur district, families in eight villages received assistance:

  • Thirumalaisamudram
  • Monnaiyampatti
  • Kuruvadipatti
  • Nattani
  • Vallampudur
  • Kottaiyur
  • Nemmeli
  • Katchikattu

Trichy district saw distributions in two locations:

  • Narikuravas Colony
  • Devarayaneri

Mayiladuthurai district included one village:

  • Semangalam

This targeted approach ensures that aid reaches diverse communities across the region.

Impact and Significance

The scale of this year's distribution is noteworthy. With hampers worth Rs 30 lakh reaching over 6,500 families, the initiative makes a tangible difference in many households. The programme not only provides material support but also strengthens the bond between the university and surrounding rural areas.

Such sustained efforts reflect SASTRA University's broader mission beyond academics. They demonstrate how educational institutions can play a vital role in community development and social responsibility.
