In a significant move to address daily commuting challenges, Panjab University (PU) in Chandigarh is gearing up to roll out a dedicated bus service for its students travelling from the neighbouring cities of Mohali and Panchkula. The initiative, expected to commence shortly, follows persistent demands from the student community for a structured and affordable transport option.

Student Advocacy Leads to Action

The decision comes on the heels of a memorandum submitted to the Dean of Student Welfare (DSW), Amit Chauhan, by PU Campus Students' Council president Gaurav and other student representatives. They highlighted the significant difficulties faced by day scholars who commute daily from these adjoining cities, often relying on multiple modes of public transport or expensive private alternatives.

Dean of Student Welfare Amit Chauhan confirmed the university's plan to proceed with the service. Instead of waiting for new buses to be sanctioned, the administration has decided to act swiftly by utilising existing resources. "We understand the daily travel hardships faced by students coming from adjoining cities. Instead of delaying the decision until additional buses are sanctioned, we are starting with the available resources so that students can benefit at the earliest," Chauhan stated.

Service Details and Trial Phase

The university will initially deploy its two existing buses that currently operate between the South Campus and North Campus from 9 am to 5 pm. To facilitate the new service, these buses will be put to use an hour before and an hour after their regular schedule specifically for pick-up and drop-off for students from Mohali and Panchkula.

The facility will begin on a trial basis to assess its practicality, gauge student demand, and determine route feasibility. A detailed route plan will be finalised after this trial run and in close consultation with the students. "Their feedback regarding pick-up points, timings, and connectivity will be crucial in shaping the final structure of the service," added Chauhan.

Affordable Pass System and Future Vision

The university plans to introduce the bus service through a monthly pass system. The exact fee structure will be decided later after a thorough evaluation of operational costs and a focus on keeping it affordable for students. "Our effort is to keep the service safe, reliable, and reasonably priced, while also ensuring it remains financially sustainable," emphasised the DSW.

This initiative is poised to benefit a large number of day scholars who currently endure longer travel times, higher expenses, and daily uncertainty. PU officials stated that the core aim is to improve accessibility, ensure punctuality, and enhance overall student convenience. The administration is hopeful of starting the service soon after a formal circular is issued next week, describing it as a vital student welfare measure designed to ease commuting challenges and support better academic engagement.
