Chandigarh: A concerning health situation unfolded at Panjab University over the past two weeks, with approximately 25 to 30 students, primarily from Girls Hostel 9 and some from Girls Hostel 10, reporting symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach upset. The incident has raised questions about campus hygiene and student welfare.

Outbreak Details and Student Accounts

According to information shared by students and university officials, the cases emerged over a span of several days, affecting students from different floors of GH 9 around the same time period. Many of the affected students sought medical consultation at the university Health Centre, while hostel wardens also addressed the matter at their administrative level.

A Health Centre official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed: "Over around 2 weeks, multiple cases of vomiting and stomach ailments were reported to us, largely from GH 9. At present, the situation seems stabilised and no new cases are being reported." The official added that precautionary directions were issued for cleaning water coolers in the hostels, with confirmation that this cleaning was carried out.

Student Concerns and Precautionary Measures

Students expressed anxiety about the outbreak. A resident of GH 9 revealed: "A few girls in the wing had similar symptoms. We are not sure what the exact cause was, but some of us were concerned about the water cooler hygiene, so for now we are avoiding drinking directly from it." Another student from GH 10 noted: "We are being cautious about what we consume and trying to stick to safer options."

Despite the situation returning to normal with no fresh complaints in recent days, lingering concerns about hygiene and water cooler cleanliness persist among the student population.

Official Responses and Differing Perspectives

Hostel authorities provided varying accounts of the incident. Assistant Professor Nishima, Warden of GH 9, stated: "We had only 5 cases in GH 9 and all the students are fine now. Our water filters are cleaned regularly and this time too, they were cleaned on February 7 as per schedule."

In contrast, Prof Varinder Kaur, Warden of GH 10, offered a different perspective: "We had around 6 to 7 cases here. As per our conclusion, the issue appeared to be linked to some fresh juice consumed by a few students, which led to them falling sick briefly. All of them recovered and are doing well."
