NIT Rourkela Crosses 100 Patents, Targets 200 Filings in 2026

NIT Rourkela Achieves Landmark 101 Patents, Sets Ambitious Targets for Innovation Growth

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela has marked a significant achievement in its research journey, crossing the milestone of 100 granted patents. Since securing its first patent in 2013, the institute has now been granted a total of 101 patents, comprising 97 national and four international patents. This accomplishment underscores a decade of dedicated innovation and scholarly output.

Steady Growth in Patent Filings and Grants

In an official statement released on Thursday, NIT Rourkela revealed that it has filed 230 patents to date, with 218 being national filings and 12 international. This reflects a consistent upward trajectory in the institute's research and innovation activities. The year 2025 proved particularly fruitful, with the institute receiving 23 patents—the highest number granted in a single year so far.

The rise in granted patents over recent years highlights the strengthening of NIT Rourkela's innovation ecosystem. The impact of the surge in filings during 2025 is anticipated to become even more pronounced in the current and upcoming years, signaling a robust pipeline of intellectual property.

Diverse Domains and Strategic Focus Areas

The granted patents span a wide array of cutting-edge domains, demonstrating the institute's multidisciplinary approach. Key areas include:

  • AI-based vehicular communication systems
  • Autonomous drone technologies
  • Industrial waste treatment solutions
  • Health-monitoring IoT devices
  • Sustainable food packaging
  • Advanced materials developed from waste resources

Director K Umamaheshwar Rao emphasized that reaching the 100-patent mark represents a crucial step in fostering a strong culture of innovation at the institute. "Our growing portfolio reflects impactful work in priority areas such as artificial intelligence, sustainable materials, healthcare, semiconductors, and water research," he stated.

Ambitious Goals and Institutional Support

With 91 patent applications filed in 2025 alone, NIT Rourkela has set an ambitious target to double the number of granted patents in the coming year. This initiative aligns with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, aiming to contribute significantly to national development through technological advancements.

The institute's Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR), established in 2022, plays a pivotal role in this endeavor. CIPR is instrumental in facilitating patent filings, technology transfer, and fostering industry collaborations. CIPR chairperson Sujit Sen highlighted that initiatives like "One scholar, one patent" have yielded strong results, driving the institute's goal to achieve at least 200 patent filings in 2026.

Future Directions and Societal Impact

Looking ahead, NIT Rourkela plans to expand its industry partnerships, increase international patent filings, and accelerate technology transfer processes. These efforts are designed to enhance both societal and industrial impact, ensuring that research innovations translate into practical applications and economic benefits.

The institute's commitment to innovation is not only about numbers but also about creating sustainable solutions that address global challenges. By leveraging its research capabilities and strategic initiatives, NIT Rourkela is poised to play a leading role in India's journey toward becoming a knowledge-driven economy.
